PowerEdge 860 and IPMI?

I've got some PowerEdge 860s in a lab environment and I'm trying to get IPMI working for an oVirt cluster.  I can configure and enable the BMC in the BIOS, and I can see it with ipmitool, do sel queries, see power status and make IPMI config changes no problem.

I can't get to the unit remotely for the life of me.  It's on a shared NIC obviously, and that NIC is working fine for standard network traffic.  It's on a tagged VLAN, and interestingly, if I try to use the same network/VLAN for the IPMI as is used on the 'core' port (different IP of course), with the vlan id set to the same VLAN as the 'core' port, it locks up the NIC port for all traffic.

I've changed the IPMI address to a new network/subnet, tagged and untagged, and I still can't get to it, but it doesn't lock up the NIC anymore.

I've done a bunch of looking, but can't find a definitive answer on whether there is any known issue that never got fixed with these systems where you can't use VLAN tagging on the port at all if you're using the  BMC?  That's about all I can figure, because I've got R610s in the same configuration and the BMC works great.

Are there some secrets I'm missing out there on using IPMI wtih PE860?  Has my google-fu failed me again?

I'm showing that the system has Firmware Revision 1.75 for the BMC, which I believe is the latest, and it claims to support IPMI 1.5, which as I understand it means I likely won't be able to use lanplus, but that's not critical, I just need function in the lab, not highest levels of security.
