Exchange 2016 Best Practices by Dell

We have purchased Dell PowerEdge R730xd for Exchange services and are looking to best practices document for Exchange 2016 implementation by Dell.

We are following the dell reference architecture for 5000 mailboxes Exchange 2016 environment. The document is also attached for reference with this post. Servers are R730XD with 16 x 8TB 7200RPM and 2 x 1.2TB SAS 10K drives.

Server have 14 x 8 TB drives for Exchange DB and Logs and 2 Spare drives ( 16 drives in total).

In storage architecture it says (Fourteen independent Raid 0 disks can be used to store copies of Exchange databases. A Raid Controller Can be used to create independent Raid 0 volumes by using internal drives." It says to create a 14 x 8TB RAID-0 for database and logs?

Q: does this mean a single 14x8TB raid 0 group or they mean 14 Raid (Raid 0) group and each Raid 0 with single disk? For reference please check page 38 of Storage Architecture section in attached document.

Q: If they mean to create one Raid0 group with 14 drives then it says to keep one drive for restore LUN? From where we will restore a LUN when, on a drive failure we will lose the entire raid 0 group?

Q: keep one hot spare - that’s understandable

Will be grateful if someone who has knowledge of these servers and storage layout shed some light and provide guidance

Thanks and regards

Server OOW PowerEdgeT420 - Non-Critical Error

After recently replacing a Physical Disk on a Connector 0 (RAID), the disk is now online and spun up however we are still seeing a Non-Critical error appearing on the following component within Dell OMSA: Enclosure (Backplane).

We have already cleared the logs to rule out any old alerts, however the severity alert of a non-critical alert is still appearing yet if we click "Enclosure (Backplane)", the next section, Physical Disks shows a status of OK.

- Does anyone have any ideas why this Non-Critical alert can be appearing?

Can anyone confirm whether this CPU will be compatible with Dell R930? I understand the spec sheet says otherwise but just like it says V4 Cpus only, V3's are also allowed. So far i have noticed they both use the same socket LGA2011.

M520 in VRTX

We had a strange outage and now two of our M520 blades in the VRTX just show the iDrac Booting on the display on the VRTX. Whether this problem is related to the fact that the CMC is showing redundancy lost I'm not sure. I have tried reseating the CMC cards but the error remains. Is the firmware held on the SD card on the CMC? if it is what would happen if I swapped them?

Foreign configuration: import or clear

Hello,
I have an old PE2900 with a Perc 6/i that tomorrow morning I found with the message:

Foreign configuration(s) found on adapter. Press any key to continue, or ’C’ to load the configuration utility or ’F’ to import foreign configuration(s) and continue.

There are offline or missing virtual drives with preserved cache. Please check the cables and ensure that all drives are present. Press any key to enter the configuration utility.

I've attached the screen shots of the VD Mgmt, PD Mgmt and Foreign view from the Configuration Utility.

It seems that the global hot spare has failed and I need to choose the CLEAR option but since I'm not a RAID expert I want to be sure to not choose the wrong procedure.

Moreover we found that there is a problem with the backup so it is very important to put online the server and perform a fll backup as soon as possible.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Support for VT-d/ACS on new R740 with Xeon Gold 6126

Hi all,

We would like to purchase the new Poweredge R740s.

The new Xeon Gold 6126 does not state support for VT-d, while the older CPU say they do. While VT-d is supposed to be a chipset feature, I'm not sure that it doesn't also need support from CPU.

Anyway, the question is if it will possible to passthrough my 10G ethernet adapters to my VMs, in a KVM environment (proxmox) and if each device will have its own interrupt.

I believe VT-d and ACS support is needed for that.

Thanx,

Spiros

ESXI 6.0 No Network Adapter found

I upgraded my Dell PowerEdge M620 blade server with dell customized esxi 6.0 U3 ISO image using VMware update manager ,and the host is no longer connected to its Vcenter server due to network adapter compatibility.

NIC model is  QLogic 577xx/578xx 10 Gb Ethernet BCM57810

NIC firmware is 7.12.17

ISO image used "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0.update03-5224934.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A03"

I tried to upgrade using the following ISO images but all are the same "No Network Adapter found"

  • VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0.update03-5572656.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A04
  • VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0.update03-6765062.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized_A05
  • VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0.update01-6765664.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A02

Also I tried to upgrade NIC firmware to the latest but still not compatible.

I check on VMware compatibility guide, and server should be ok.ISO images are downloaded from dell support using server service tag .

Any advice

Poweredge 2650 Embedded Server Management Error

Hello all.  I'm hoping someone can help us.  We have 2 Poweredge 2650 and they've been great for 14 years.  One is now given us boot trouble and it has vital data on it that apparently wasn't getting backed up.  It starts to boot to "Initializing Remote Access Controller", but eventually returns "Error: Remote Access Controller Initialization Failure".  It then continues to load with "Checking embedded server management firmware" and dies at "Embedded Server Management Error".

Reading other solutions, I've tried reseating the Riser board, but to no avail.  Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks,

AJ

bmr of poweredge t420 with perc s110 - windows reports "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found"

trying to perform, what should be a straight-forward, bmr of a windows 2008 r2 server.

i'm guessing that the windows restore path doesn't have the raid controller drivers necessary to see the disks, and if that is the case, what to do to get the server to see the restore disks!

i did a fresh install of windows 2008 to ensure that disks/raid was ok, and then was able to restore a data partition fine from the backup image.  however, what i need is to perform a complete bmr, because this is a primary domain controller and i need to get windows os back and everything that goes along with it!

i have never experienced more trouble in trying to do,  what should be, server 101.

i'm not really sure what my options are at this point, and really need some guidance through this process.

if there are guides or other solutions others have found to this particular problem, i'm all ears.

How to disable ss/web on idrac7 with Basic Management (no idrac license)?

I have a Dell R320 Server. I need to disable ssh/web access to this server becase of PCI DSS compliance.

It isn't  a IDRAC Enterprise and it doesn't allow to use rcadm command to disable the web / ssh servers. Altough they are not useful, it is Basic Managment without license, when a scan is performed with Nessus several vulnerabilities are displayed because of this.

I have seen that there is a tool for a trial license of 30 days, but it needs to stop the server: boot from a CD-ROM and restart the server.

Some options?

R210 II - Increasing Frequent Rebooting After Long Uptime

Hi,

I have an R210 II running pfSense 2.4 which runs perfectly for anytime between a few days and a month before experiencing a random reboot. After this initial crash, the reboots become increasingly frequent until the system is unable to POST.

When left unpowered for a few hours/days the system begins POST'ing again and works perfectly once again until the process repeats. I've found that if I wait one day then the system stays online for around two days and if I wait a week then the system will stay online for around two-three weeks before the system crashes.

There are no events being logged inside the System Event Log by the iDRAC. While booting the server presents error code 1-3-4 on the front panel LEDs.

There was a storm that knocked the power out in our office, and during that time one of our servers went down. It is plugged into an APC, but im assuming the power surge may have something to do with this.

The server will not boot to the BIOS or turn on at all.

I am getting several error codes

Poweredge R630, Perc H330 Raid Controller

Hi

I am hoping someone can help.  We were supplied a Poweredge R630 server with no Raid controller.  After multiple issues with the SD Cards we want to get a Hardware Raid controller in the server for running Xencenter.

We were able to buy the PERC H330 Raid controller but have been able to find the cables anywhere for this.  I phoned Dell and they passed me onto their parts suppliers in the UK but failed to phone me back after contacting them 3 times.

Does anyone know where I can get these cables?

Link for the raid card is below.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hello,

I'm currently running....

M391B5773DH0 - YH9 memory
DIMM DDR3 PC10600E(1333) UNBUF 1RX8 @ 4Gigs RAM

With....

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3460 @ 2.80GHz 2.79 GHz

I've tried doing a total memory upgrade kit for this server, and the server will not post nor has any video. The memory I tried is... 32GB Memory Upgrade Kit (2x16GB) 2RX4 PC3-10600R     PC3.10600R.2x16GB.KIT.

Is the memory not working because my processor needs the PC3-10600R 2RX8 memory? Or can you suggest a memory kit that will work?

Updating Disk Firmware on R710

$

Hi this is my first post on this forum I'm not sure if this problem is an issue with my R710 or if it is a problem with the PERC6i in it. I've tried searching and so far my google foo has come up with nothing except for scary solutions that I don't want to attempt.

I recently purchased some dell branded ST2000NM0023 disks for my server. I noticed the firmware on them appears to out of date (GE09 is what is show in megacli) latest version is GS15 released in 2017. I decided it would be good to update the disks before I start loading them up with data so I went and grabbed the Windows executable to update to version GS15. For some reason when I run the executable it waits 10 seconds then an error message appears saying that it is not compatible with my system. Right now I have server 2012 installed and grabbed the .exe listed as compatible with server 2012 and ST2000NM0023 from dell.com/support.

I thought that maybe it was an issue with disk IO since the OS was installed on the raid arrary so I then downloaded the EFI version of Nautilus Disk Updater (also listed for the R710). Nautilus boots up in EFI mode but there are no options in the menu and all input boxes are blank. I thought that maybe it was an issue with the R710 (all firmware is up to date using LCC) and downloaded the DOS version of Nautilus. The DOS version was a little more helpful and said that it doesn't support the SAS 3GB/s controllers so I could eliminate Nautilus as being an option to update it.

So I did some more reading and it sounds like you can update the drives directly from LSI's megacli utility using the -pdfwdownload option. I took a look at this option but I have some issues with it, it looks like megacli expects the disk to do its own verification. This is a scary prospect as I don't know much about how a SAS disk verifies if a firmware file is the right one and to make matters worse Nautilus version A19 has two different firmware files for the Seagate Megaladon disk so I can't even determine which one is the right option. For now I'm just going to stick with the current firmware version and hope for the best unless someone has a workaround for this problem.

I tried downloading the .bin file for Redhat and tried using it on centos but it looks like the bin verifies if its running on redhat so it didn't run either. I'm not sure if this is a common problem but would like to hear how other users have got around this problem. Would buying a H700 and using that instead solve this in my case?

PERC 9 and 'disk cache policy'

$

PERC 9 has a virtual disk setting for "disk cache policy".  The help in OpenManage says it's disabled by default for SAS but with the latest OpenManage I find it's enabled.

Previous posts have described this setting as applying to write caching not read caching.  Previous posts have discouraged turning it on because of what would happen if power failed to the drive and cache contents were not written to disk.  Seems reasonable.

BUT now Seagate and HGST have things like 'Turbo Boost' and "NVC Quick Cache" that are non-volatile approaches to write caching.

So I'm wondering if the best practice to this setting:

1.) Depends on the way caching is implemented in the drive.  If it's volatile caution is warranted concerning how much faith you have in your UPS.

2.) For any SAS drives shipped recently just turn it on?
