XC730xd as file server?

$

Howdy,

We currently have three XC730xd devices that are running Nutanix as a Hyper-V Cluster.  We are migrating away from Nutanix and want to know if we can rebuild these machines as regular old Windows Servers or if there is anything special about them that we would not be able to do that.

We would take all three of the boxes, rebuild them and then recreate them as a DFS cluster or some other usage where we'd just bundle all the hard drives together as a giant file server.

Does anyone know if we can easily do this or not?

Thanks!

Ransomware Attack- Need Rescue Discs

My PowerEdge T110 II server was hit by a ransomware virus (Cezar). Although there is antivirus installed, it was infected through a workstation. The server, and none of the workstations, is encrypted and not even discoverable on the network.

The server did not come with original discs, the manuals never said to order them (For Free) while in warrantee, and there was no option to request them during product registration. Now that the server is a few months out of warrantee, and I need them, Dell wants me to buy the recovery discs which should have been included with the server.

Does anyone have a recovery disc for the PowerEdge T110 II with Server 2012?

R610 Lifecycle Controller/IDRAC Unable to Update

I've got a hard one for you guys here. I've been fighting with this thing for the past two weeks to get the IDRAC/LCC firmware updated to no avail. I'd really rather not have to replace the thing if at all possible (I got it for a deal, used, but everything was 'working' when purchased - just outdated), but I need a definitive answer.

TL;DR:
iDRAC6 version 1.10.00 (Build 13), LCC version 0.0.0.0
Server 2008 R2 LCC/iDRAC DUP fails
Server 2012 R2 LCC/iDRAC DUP fails
CentOS 6 LCC/iDRAC DUP fails
Dell Repository Manager bootable linux ISO fails
Uploading Firmware through iDRAC GUI times out/logs me out of web session
POST has "A System Services Update is Required" (can't press F10)
BIOS, NIC, SAS, backplane, etc all update fine

Full version:

Microsoft recently decomed a bunch of poweredge R610s they had used in their datacenters, and I was able to pick one up for $100 (two procs, 12GB, iDrac enterprise, who could say no?) Thing boots just fine, F10 error not present, has all original, non-updated firmware from 2009. Obviously this means I can't use the remove KVM/console, due to recent security updates in Java. I figure "well, we have PE1950s, PE2950s, a PER810, and I've updated all those - how hard could an R610 be?" So, I hit up Dell's support website and download some firmware. I throw Server 2012 R2 on it at first, and run some updates. Everything goes fine, until the iDRAC/LCC. I believe the error on S2012R2 was "BMCFWUW.exe has stopped working" and the iDrac update tab showed "a firmware update is in progress, please try again later". I said OK, and came back hours later to see it had cleared itself. Try again, same problem. I do some reading, and move to stage 2.

I'd never used the LCC on a server before, but I heard it can do some cool things so I figured I'd try it that way. I booted the server into the LCC menu (F10), and it sat there for a solid 45 minutes with the Dell logo on the screen. Eventually the server rebooted itself, booted back into the F10 menu (for far less time), then rebooted with the "System Services Update is Required" message. That didn't sound good, so I started searching and found just how far the rabbit hole can go. It was a learning experience (we don't use dell servers that often, this was purchased for personal use), so I got to use the SBUU, SUU, Repository manger, and bootable linux for the first time, but each was unable to solve the problem.

I've tried:
Running DUPs from Server 2012 R2
- This resulted in BMCFWUW.exe has stopped working, server reboot

Running DUPs from Server 2008 R2
- This resulted in "Failed to access Virtual USB Device", NO "Firmware update is in progress" message

Running racadm racreset soft
Running ipmitool raw 0x06 0x05 0x64 0x52 0x45 0x4D 0x24 0x73 0x74 0x38 and ipmitool raw 0x30 0xac 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 (as seen here)
- Result of first command was nothing (blank line), result of second was 0x00 0x00

Running the update that comes immediately after 1.10.13 on 2012 R2, 2008 R2, and CentOS 6 (believe it is 1.3x, as seen here)
Running updates with BIOS 1.3.6 from 2012 R2 (as seen here)
Draining flea power between attempts (holding power for 20 sec, unplugged)
Resetting the NVRAM via onboard jumper
Reseting BIOS and iDRAC (num/caps/scroll lock, CTRL+E, F, B)
Running linux live ISO from USB (had to use the re-mount trick, ALT+F2, mount /dev/sdx /opt/dell/toolkit/systems, run applybundles.sh manually)
- This resulted in some packages missing errors, later addressed by doing a full install of CentOS to install the dependencies

Running DSU from CentOS with required packages
- This resulted in, again, "Unable to access virtual USB Device", even though I see the "scrtch" device mounted (though its contents are empty)

Uploading the firmimg.d6 file to the controller through the web interface
- This results in a 10 minute+ upload session in IE (tried on Server 2012 R2, 2008 R2, and even 2003 R2), and a quick session in Chrome/Firefox, but all end with by browser headed back to the login screen, and none of them actually complete the upload (progress bar gets about halfway in IE, and Chrome/FF between 13%-89% depending on the file)

Uploading BDF_1.5.2_BIN-7.usc / USC_1.2.0_Rep_Pack_A00.usc / USC_1.7.5, and another, newer BDF
- This has the same outcome as the firmimg.d6 files

I've tried downloading the Dell Support Live Image Version 2.2
- This results in 404, file not found using both the browser download and download manager download, link here

Probably a few other solutions as well that I can't remember - I think the only one I haven't gotten to work is the SBUU / SUU combo, as I didn't have a CD large enough to store the images until now

Honestly I don't know what else to do. The server obviously has no warranty on it anymore, and I'm not sure which part needs replacing if it comes to that. I'm currently setup with a triple boot system, so I can get into 2012 R2, 2008 R2 and centOS without having to re-install, and try any fixes you guys might know of. I have probably close to every iDRAC6 firmware version and 11G BIOS version, and can flash/attempt flash through any OS to get some results for you guys. If you know of anything else that I can try, please tell me. I feel like of dump going through all this just to get remote console working on the newest version of Java, but I'm an IT guy, and it's my job to fix things. I'd like to fix this.

Getting "memory configuration is not optimal press f1 to continue" After memory is installed [ Edited ]

I replaced the entire fleet of 2gb memory sticks in a Dell Poweredge R715 with: Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 ECC RDIMM (Part#CT5321400).

I have two processors, so following the manual, I believed the correct slots for the two sticks to be A1 and B1.

When starting/rebooting the server I am prompted with the listed memory config. not optimal message. When I look at the hardware configuration it is show the ram as being 1333.

What're the next steps in resolving this message and creating an optimal config?

Dell PowerEdge R715 - Receiving: Installed Memory Configuration is Not Optimal - Error Message

All of the RAM is being identified by the server, but this message continues to pop up, forcing someone to physically be at the server during the time of a power cycle in order to get the system up. This is causing us issues with automatic updates and server restarts. I've attached information regarding the memory configuration. How can I remove the required F1 strike to continue with boot?

-Running Windows Server 2008 R2

Hello.
I'm trying to do "mission impossible 7" and upgrade my iDrac6 Enterprise firmware.
So far I found many broken links, documentation to older version of the support site and download file that ends with errors messages.

My question is if anyone ever succeeded with this mission and can give me a hint.
Thanks in advace - Tal.

The device " " disappeared from the system

After the weekly reboot, I am seeing the following two errors in the event logs and not sure what they mean.

The device 'iDRAC SECUPD USB Device' (USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_iDRAC&Prod_SECUPD&Rev_0323\20080519-1&0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

The device 'USB Mass Storage Device' (USB\VID_0624&PID_0249\20080519-1) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

It appears that the server isn't recognizing these two USB devices, but not sure how to resolve?

iDRAC 6 / R710 - "Temp: Unavailable in standby"

Hi Experts,

I have searched long and hard to find a solution to the error message I am getting on my PowerEdge R710 server. The LCD reads

Temp: Unavailable in standby

Additionally, the Temperature page of iDRAC 6 shows just the headers and no data.

The server is operational, but the fans seem to be at stand-by speed. However, if the lid is opened they fire up to full instrusion speed - same at boot up.

The server has the latest BIOS version and is fully up-to-date.

Does anyone have any ideas why I am getting this message?

Thanks,

Chris

How does FX2 IO Aggrigator advertise multiple nics to guest?

$

I have an FX2 chassis with 4 FC430 blades.  Three running VMWare 6.0, one running Windows Server 2012 R2.  In each of the OS's they only see two NICs.  One goes out the top IOA which I have two 10 gig fiber sfp+ modules in connecting to the network in LACP, and the other goes out the bottom IOA which has passive Twinax to two different brocade 10gbe switches, each also containing an uplink to an EMC VNX SAN providing NFS datastores to those VMWare instances.

I may bring on another storage array across those two broacade eithernet switches, but VMware sees that connection as one vmnic.  The reason this is important is that I need to identify both uplinks (both to each switch) to setup multipathing rules for iSCSI over that jumbo frame ethernet switch.  How can I define how each blade "sees" the uplinks in the IO Agrigator cards?

Also for the uplink to the network, is it possible to double that uplink and have all 4 ports uplinked (for 40gbps throughput)?  Or for NFS/iscsi, two 10gig's in LACP on one switch and two 10gigs in LACP on another switch?

Just looking for configuration advice.  Our stand alone PowerEdge R620's get better network throughput but they have dedicated QLogic 10gig nics in them.  Nothing is shared like in an FX2 chassis.  I like the size of the FX2 and how we can really consolidate a lot of compute in it, but not so much the reduction in throughput.

PowerEdge T410 Memory Upgrade Questions.

  • I have a T410 currently with a single Xeon CPU E5640. The second processor slot is empty.
  • I'm running VMWare ESXi 6.x with several Windows Server 2012 VM's
  • I have 3 Samsung 4gb 2r8 PC3l 1060R in memory slots (dual ranked, 1066 Mhz) in A1, A2, A3.

With this motherboard, there are three memory channels,

  • 0 which uses A1 and A4 together
  • 1 which uses A2
  • 2 which uses A3

I want to upgrade memory, preferably without replacing existing chips. I've read a half a dozen posts and haven't found a definitive answer. The hardware guide states these rules:

  • Except for memory channels that are unused, all populated memory channels must have identical configurations.
  • In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor must be identical.
  • Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed within a memory channel (for example, 2-GB and 4-GB), but all populated channels must have identical configurations. This applies to only channel 0.

Questions:

  1. Can I put an 8G dual ranked chip in the empty slot A4 for a net of 20gb? That would mean channel 0 = 12gb, channels 1 and 2 would be 4gb each.
  2. Can I move a 4gb chip from A3 to A4 and put an 8GB chip in A3? Channel 0 = 8GB, Channel 1 = 4GB, Channel 3 = 8GB
  3. Is there a configuration where I can add a single 16gb chip?
  4. In the future, I would like to add a second processor, I understand that the A and B configurations have to match, what is my best options for more memory, reusing what I have now and will purchase for the current memory only upgrade?

Hello,

I have a Dell PE R610 with Bios version 6.4.0 and Dual Processor X5650's, running server 2016 with Hyper-V.

The X5650 processor says it supports Intel® VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT). I have enabled Virtualization technology in the Bios but there no place to enable VT-x.
My question is if my processor supports EPT why am i unable to enable it? Coreinfo says it doesn't support EPT.

Hello,

I have an older PowerEdge T110 server which needs memory upgraded. I have purchased both ECC and Non-ECC type memory without success on this server. The diagnostics light tells me that theres "an issue with the memory configuration" however I've reviewed the manual countless times and I'm sure that my memory is correctly inserted and supported. My BIOS is currently updated to the latest version at the time of writing (1.10.0). Could anyone please provide assistance?

Neither of my configurations have worked (single channel with one card) and various other configurations.
