How to use Dell Support Live Image 2.2 and Server Update Utility

$

Hi, I downloaded Dell Support Live Image 2.2 and am trying to use Dell Server Update Utility which as per this link appears to state that its included in live image. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=CWF92

However the user guide for live image states that the server update utility is a separate installer. I am confused as I cannot find SUU in live image. Are there any instructions on how to use live image and server update utility together. Is there some other manual which lists the steps on how to launch SUU with live image?

Thanks

Firmware Upgrade Killed 2950

I acquired some 2950s and went to upgrade the firmware on them. First server the BIOS and the BMC. Those rebooted as required fine. I then upgraded the DRAC, PERC and maybe something else I can't remember. None required a reboot. I then rebooted. The fans spin, front panel lights up blue and does it's scrolling text, but that's all that happens. Ideas?

Dell R820 Power Supply firmware fail

$

I updated the firmware today on my R820 server, which I have done on several other Dell PE's of similar if not the same model. This time something odd happened. The whole unit powered off and wouldn't come back on. I left it there for quite a few minutes to see if it was just doing it's thing and would power itself back on. The front of the server had lost power completely. I couldn't get the power button to work or anything. Eventually, I had to pull the plugs and then plug it back in and I was able to fire it up again.

Well, now I get a power supply configuration error detected error on boot. If I look at OpenManage, it says that PS1 is fine, gives me the readings, etc. If I look at PS2, it says NA for everything except it says Presence Detected Configuration Error.

They were both working fine prior to this update, so I dont know what happened.

Any way to resolve this for the power supply in question?

Thanks.

Poweredge R620 -- recognizing "default" network interface (iDRAC vs NICs)

$

Hi all,

I'm a new-to-the-industry network technician assigned to an R620 server in a test environment. I am working on a PlanetLab project, and I'm trying to figure out how to bring this server online. I understand this sounds like a question for PL Support, but we've been stumped and at this point I'm trying to get any help or ideas I can try, in addition to working with PL Support.

As part of the installation, I have a bootable CD with a custom Linux kernel. When booted from the CD, the server should initialize network connections then contact the PL central servers and install things. However, I never manage to get past the network initialization.

The server has an Enterprise license. I assigned a public IP address to the iDRAC port, and nothing is connected to any of the ethernet port. It is on Dedicated mode. The iDRAC port is reachable remotely, and a test OS shows that I am able to make connections out from the server -- i.e none of the hardware is defective or misconfigured.

The error I got was "Device eth0 does not exist, most likely this CD does not support your hardware."

What I have tried so far:

  • Adding a tag to tell the CD to look for em1 instead of eth0. I get the same message, "Device em1 does not exist......"
  • Adding a tag to tell the CD to look for the iDRAC MAC address.
  • Changing the mode from Dedicated to Shared and selecting LOM1 as the active interface (with a working plugged in cable).
  • Adding a tag to tell the CD to look for the MAC address of the LOM1 port.

The error message remains the same. As a test, I tried using the CD to boot up on a few other Dell desktop computers (I didn't note the model numbers), and this time the CD recognizes eth0 on those machines (running Windows 7 Enterprise, though it shouldn't matter since the OS was not even booted up yet).

So there is something about the way iDRAC vs NICs work. Beyond the basic understanding of the iDRAC being a separate controller with its own network adapter, processor, etc, I am new to the DRAC technology.

Unfortunately, I cannot figure out what, and am running out of ideas. At this point, I'd appreciate greatly any ideas I can try to get the CD to recognize the DRAC network adapter. Or even one of the 4 ports.

Thanks so much for reading.

fans run at high-speed over-cooling CPU

we have two identical server R220, except one with E3-1220 and other with E-1230. I am trying to run them with very low power and noise, so I've disabled turbo-mode and hyper-threading on E3-1230, thus making it very similar to E3-1220.

But... here is CPU temp and fans speed on one server

ID | Name             | Type                     | Reading    | Units | Event
7  | Sys Fan1         | Fan                      | 3480.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
8  | Sys Fan2         | Fan                      | 3480.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
9  | Sys Fan3         | Fan                      | 3360.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
10 | Inlet Temp       | Temperature              | 26.00      | C     | 'OK'
72 | Temp             | Temperature              | 36.00      | C     | 'OK'

and here is on another

7  | Sys Fan1         | Fan                      | 8640.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
8  | Sys Fan2         | Fan                      | 8880.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
9  | Sys Fan3         | Fan                      | 3120.00    | RPM   | 'OK'
10 | Inlet Temp       | Temperature              | 23.00      | C     | 'OK'
72 | Temp             | Temperature              | 28.00      | C     | 'OK'

I've tried all possible ways to bring Temp to 30+C so the fans will run at 3K: updated BIOS, iDRAC, replaced fans, replaced MB too. Apparently this MB does not have chip for OS to regulate fans speed.

Any insight and recommendation are appreciated

Thanks

Dell MP - SCOM2012

Hi

I've imported the SCOM MP into our SCOM2012 environment, but I'm not getting any luck with alerts in monitoring screen.

As a test, I've updated the server administrator to 8.1, tried to reduce time it takes to monitor to every 30 mins, but still nothing. I can see the errors on the server when I log onto server administrator locally, but nothing gets pushed through as an alert to SCOM. Interestingly if I open the diagram view on the SCOM console for the servers I can see yellow or red warnings.

I've only imported, the base MP and the a few server packs, not gone ott by importing everything. The guide has been read several time, and I cant see what I am doing wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

R710 not pulling up Perc 6/e

I have a R710 with a H700 raid controller.  I wanted to add a PERC 6/E to it, but when I add the 6/E it does not pull up.  I removed the H700 and it still won't pull up.  Any thoughts on what this could be other than a bad 6/E controller?

Thanks,

Upgrading W2008R2 to W2012 on Dell R510

$

Hi!

We have a virgin installation of W2008R2 on host and multiple VMs. To be able to assign more CPU cores to individual vritual machines (4 is the limit of W2008 R2), we would like to upgrade the Host to W2012.

We are hoping for:

1.) Start setup, overwrite existing W2008 installation and after reboot everything just works.

2.) Can we do this over remote desktop?

3.) Will VMs (all W2008) simply work or is some special procedure required (import/export) prior to upgrade?

4.) Do we need any additional drivers to be provided during upgrade (Dell PERC H700)?

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Especially, if somebody attempted this before.

Thanks!

Hello,

I have an interesting issue on a production servers used for a SharePoint farm. It worked OK for almost 1 year, but on the last 2 days are only issues related to the CPU speed.

Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v2 @ 2.10GHz, 2100 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

The machine is very slow at this moment and it was restarted for times already. I do not have access on the server to check the BIOS for CPU throttling. I can login only remote.

Any ideas?

Dell Poweredge R710 Not booting after hot swapping drives

I am having an issue with one of our DVR servers. There where two drives that where giving me issues. One had completely failed and the other was imminent. I replaced the bad drive first, gave it some time to get the info on the drive, and then swapped out the second drive. When I swapped the second drive the system rebooted itself. When it came back up it had a foreign configuration detected error. I went in and cleared that error, and tried rebooting. When it rebooted it got to the PXE boot sequence, and then tries to boot and cannot find anything to boot from. Please help. RAID 5.

Here are the specs on the system

PowerEdge R730 | OS installation fails after upgrade iDrac/LCC firmware/Bios

$

Hi All,

I unpacked a new server from carton box and wanted to install Windows Server 2008 R2 OS on that. I first checked the existing firmware version/bios and found it to be of September 2014 and the current available is that of April 2015. (month I'm not sure but the latest one from Dell Site)

I downloaded SUU and updated the firmware one at time by pressing F10 at boot > after entering LCC > Update Firmware. (First iDrac, reboot, then BIOS, then reboot & NIC and reboot).

When started server again I got BSOD. ( I wish I had read that entire note). I rebooted and rollback firmware one by one (BIOS, iDRAC, & didn't see NIC Firmware in that rollback list).

When I try to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 OS from LCC (F10) it proceeds halfway through & then stucks with the error message, unable to find required driver.

Now which Driver is that I don't know. I download Dell DriverPack for OS (available in .exe format) and plugged in USB so that on OS install screen, I can load drivers. It doesn't detects and throws the message, unable to find signed drivers. I don't understand why Drivers downloaded from Dell Site is causing me so much issue. I tried using USB with catalog folder (in which I had copied files from Repository Folder, in SUU) but it didn't work. Should I try copying the entire SUU and try loading drivers from it during Install.

Then I downloaded all drivers manually and copied to USB & tried. It didn't work. I later extracted few drivers which ever I could on my 32-Bit machine and then tried, no luck.

I downloaded the latest SBUU (System Build & Update Utility) and booted the system using ISO (Configured iDRAC), it says not compatible with this version of Hardware or Software (Don't Remember know).

Then I installed the Dell Repository Manager on my win 7 machine & downloaded the catalog/plugins and exported the repository in SUU format for Dell PowerEdge 730 & R730xd and copied to my Pen Drive. During OS install, at select hard-disk screen if I try to load drivers before formatting the drive it says no signed drivers were found.

I then installed Windows Server 2012 R2 without any USB, just F10 and normal method to see if it is causing issue with specific OS or is it some other issue.

I've to re-install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on that but before that I'm planning to update all Drivers/Firmware from within OS (including iDRAC/BIOS ) and then once again try installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from LCC. or should I exclude iDRAC & BIOS for now & try.

Or

Should I reset everything to factory shipped state and then try installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. (How to rollback to factory mode?, guide me)

What is the best course of action?
I've downloaded so many softwares SUU, SBUU, Dell Driver Pack, Dell Repository Bundles , how to use any one of them & when, please guide?

Can we use vFLASH Card for supplying OS Drivers?

First Time I got stuck on simple task for 4 days.

Need urgent help. Thanks for reading lengthy question.

iDRAC7 racadm command to delete indexed user

iDRAC7 racadm command to delete indexed user?

Background: R720 utilizing the iDRAC7, 1.57.57 firmware

Been trying to find a way to delete a user account from the DRAC interface.  You can add a new user quite easily, but there doesn't seem to be an option to delete a user.

Have searched the web and found the following RACADM command line entry multiple times, but it does not seem to work with iDRAC7...

Syntax:  racadm config -g <groupName> -o <objectName> -i <index 1-16> ""

but when I've attempted to use this command with the NULL entry [""], it isn't accepted

   PS> racadm config -g cfgUserAdmin -o cfgUserAdminUserName -i 3 ""
ERROR: Invalid syntax. An object value must be specified.

Was this ability removed from iDRAC7?  Is there a way to delete a user from iDRAC7?

Hello,

We recently rebooted one of our PE 2950's; since rebooting OpenManage is unable to get any power usage information from the PSUs. In "PowerManagement in OMSA" the error we see is:

Power Consumption Information is not available on this system because all the Power Supply units on your system do not support PMBus or the firmware on your system does not support power monitoring.

It was working perfectly prior to the reboot!

Any ideas?!

Help! SAS Drive Changed to Foreign

$

I have a test R710 server that runs Vmware. The server has three SAS drives, and one of the drives changed to FOREIGN. Is there anyway that I might be able to access that drive, or am I SOL. I was using it for some test development/learning, and would love to be able to recover some of the VMs on that drive. I should have ordered a couple of extra drives to setup mirroring, and put it off too long. It figures that the drive contained my Domain controller, in addition to another VM desktop machine that I used a lot. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I need to update our 2950s running ESXi 4.1.

I downloaded the SBUU utility and booted it up to a point where I need to select a device that will contain the updates (BIOS, Firmware,,)

Where can I download the update files and how are they stored on USB or DVD so the SBUU can read the device?

 thanks
