Dell Poweredge R710 Not booting after hot swapping drives

$

I am having an issue with one of our DVR servers. There where two drives that where giving me issues. One had completely failed and the other was imminent. I replaced the bad drive first, gave it some time to get the info on the drive, and then swapped out the second drive. When I swapped the second drive the system rebooted itself. When it came back up it had a foreign configuration detected error. I went in and cleared that error, and tried rebooting. When it rebooted it got to the PXE boot sequence, and then tries to boot and cannot find anything to boot from. Please help. RAID 5.

Here are the specs on the system

PowerEdge R530 and Windows Server 2008 EMB R2 Service Pack 1

$

Dear All,

I have purchased a Dell Poweredge R530 and they sent me the system with an English version Windows Server 2008 EMB R2 SP1. I have not been able to install the EMB version on the server but DELL is adamant that the OS is compatible with the server. I highly doubt that as every time I install the RAID drivers (which are not included in the OS) I get a bluescreen. Once I install Standard Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 it works without loading the drivers before OS installation.

DELL (China) refuses to give me a refund and says they did nothing wrong with the sale and all products are compatible.

Please let me know if anybody can confirm my doubts on incompatibility.

Thank you in advance for a prompt reply.

Kind regards,

Simon

Poweredge R320 PSU FAILED Firmware Update Bricked

$

I'm quite annoyed with the fact that.

1. Our warranty for the Poweredge R320 had expired. Tried to extend warranty but no reply from DELL. Wanted to extend the warranty before trying to address the PSU failed fan trip issue by flashing the required firmware.

2. After religiously following the firmware process, in the end we are left with a BRICKED PSU and no spare PSU rendering our clients BACKUP server unusable! We simply ran the firmware update where it went through the notion and we left it for over an hour. After coming back to the server we are left with an orange flashing PSU.

The power supply is only able to powerup the iLo/idrac and nothing else. WHen you try to upload the firmware for the PSU it says that its not compatible. I tried it via ssh and initate an update with the force switch but it says there is no compatible device.

What to do now?

Upon googling, I am not the only person that has had this predicament!

TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. DELL ARMING USERS with BUGGY not 100% fool or bug proof FIRMWARE RELEASE!!!!!!

We have other dell servers deployed and this is a first major issue we've hit. I may have to get the arms of the ACCC to get this matter addressed as DELL support solution/help is for me to PURCHASE a new PSU!!!

Really!!!! Your firmware method isn't perfect and I am pretty sure it can easily be replicated to FAIL!!!

Please provide some kind of SOLUTION to get this server back up on line. It is only less than two years OLD (purchased from DFO with only 1 year warranty).

please fix DELL Diag v5162

DELL 32bit Diag v5162 is a phantom.
The internal release number is 2MM6J. I found it in the repo folder of SUU 15.04 and 14.10 I think, too.

LC / Dell FTP Catalog doesn't know about it.

DELL Repo Manager 2.0 doesn't know about it either, obviously.

It doesn't exist here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=2MM6J

Not listed for any of the DELL servers here either: http://delltalk.dell.com/

example: http://delltalk.dell.com/latest_poweredge-11g.html#T610 Diags

Please fix this release so that it's available for all <12G servers. Plus we need the DOS image for it as well (for PXE booting).

CMC web interface access lost, requires RACRESET, inconsistent, but recurring

Under the CMC 4.5, we were able to reliably access CMC via the web interface for ~3 months. In January, we added externally signed certificates to the CMC (required by parent organization). We updated the CMC to 5.00 and we tried (failed) to enable user authentication through active directory.

After each change, the system seemed to work properly. After a few days, the web interface is no longer accessible (no response) and there is no error message. Physically removing the active CMC does force the CMC controller to flip, but it doesn't restore the web interface.

The only way to restore the web interface is to SSH to the CMC and executing the command "RACRESET SOFT". Upon reset, the web interface works fine.

After another day or two, the web interface stops responding again.

The upgrade to 5.0.1 helped on one chassis, but it still happens once a week on the other.

I thought the issue might be tied to attempted failed logons, but it is not that consistent.

In the hardware and CMC log, I can't find anything clearly related to this. Started about that time, a regular series of 30 second losses in redundancy appears in the log. These might actually be the RACRESET instead of the cause.

Any assistance in how I can troubleshoot this will be greatly appreciated.

Upgrading from SATA 1TB drive to SAS 2TB drive in R620 server

Hi,

I have a R620 with a Perc H710 Mini Raid.  I currently have 3 1TB SATA drives in a RAID 5 config and need more disk space.  Unfortunately I have the backplane that only supports up to 4 drives.

I tried to replace the drives with 3 2TB SATA drives but the RAID controller shows Blocked.  I put the 2 of the original 3 drives back in and 1 of the 2TB drives to see what OMSA shows.

OMSA shows unsupported and the drive size is showing 232 GB instead of 2TB...any suggestions?

Thanks for any help!

Low negotiated speed after HDD upgrade

I have a Dell Power edge T105 running Windows Server 2008  R2. It has a SAT 6ir controller. The original WE RE 500GB discs were running out of space so these have been replaced with WD 2TB RE drives. Everything seems to be working okay but I have noticed that the negotiated speed is only 1.5Gbs instead of 3Gbs that the original drives were running at. Is there any way the negotiated speed can be restored to 3Gbs?

So I have started seeing SEL entries for system board Consumption current is greater than the upper critical threshold and in looking at the power monitoring page in DRAC I see Max Peaks are listing at:

65422 W | 223285 BTU/hr

Uhhhhh what? :)

So before this started I upgraded all firmware EXCEPT the PSU which is at 07.09.47 so is this the new DRAC/LC, BIOS firmware not playing nice with the old PSU firmware and reporting wacky info?

I really don't want to upgrade the PSU firmware. I have bricked PSUs before following Dell procedure so it's way down near the bottom on my happy list :(

Has anybody else seen this?

Poweredge T420 - GPU Install

$

Hello all,

I am trying to understand how gpu installation work.

Let me say that I have already managed to install a gpu card on my own server but I used a tricky way to give it the required power supply.

In fact from the system owner's manual seems to be a piece of cake like just plug your GPU to the CN11 connector but is not. I don't have any CN11 connector on my motherboard and this belong to the power interposer board that is available only in a redundant configuration.

There is any way to find out if the CN11 is only present in a redundant power solution or if I have to change the whole system in order to have this connector ?

This is also a good question for any future GPU card addition (SLI scenario).

Thanks everybody.

R815 no POST after switching UEFI-BIOS boot mode

$

While attempting to troubleshoot an upgrade of AMD CPU's in an R815 server running Windows 2012 Server, I set the boot mode from UEFI to BIOS mode. (In retrospect, it looks like this is a neophyte mistake!) The machine will no longer POST, and immediately shuts down. I found the following in one of the Dell manuals:

"Troubleshooting System Startup Failure

If your system halts during startup prior to video output or LCD messaging, especially after installing an operating system or reconfiguring your system's hardware, check for the following conditions:

• If you boot the system to the BIOS boot mode after installing an operating system from the UEFI Boot Manager, the system will hang. The reverse is also true. You must boot to the same boot mode in which you installed the operating system. See Using the System Setup Program and UEFI Boot Manager."

and...

"Choosing the System Boot Mode

The System Setup program also enables you to specify the boot mode for installing your operating system:

• BIOS boot mode (the default) is the standard BIOS-level boot interface.

• UEFI boot mode is an enhanced 64-bit boot interface based on Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specifications that overlays the system BIOS. See Entering the UEFI Boot Manager for more information on this interface.

You must select the boot mode in the Boot Mode field of the "Boot Settings Screen" of the System Setup program. After specifying the boot mode, proceed to install your operating system in that mode. Thereafter, boot the system to the same boot mode (BIOS or UEFI) to access the installed operating system. Trying to boot the operating system from another boot mode causes the system to halt immediately at startup."

However - I haven't found any information about rescuing the situation, so that I can get back to any kind of booting process. (Have tried resetting NVRAM, and booting from USB with DOS-formatted stick with BIOS replacement - without success).

Any pointers would be gratefully accepted!

Only one of two Ethernet network adapter works on my Dell pe2950 II, running VMware esxi 6.0.

How could I make the second adapter work?

Summary:

  1. Server module: Dell PowerEdge 2950 II.
  2. OS: VMware esxi 6.0
  3. Both two adapters are QLogic NetXtreme II BCM5708 (Onboard).
  4. Both two adapters LED were flashing before booting into ESXi. Port 1 went dead once finished BIOS selfcheck.
  5. Tried swich the Network Cable, turned out to be the same.
  6. The dead adapter (vmnic0) status on Vsphere client is"Disconnected". Another one (vmnic1) is "Full-duplex" and working.
  7. Both two works fine on CentOS.

M1000E Blade Chassis Issue

I have an M1000e that I have started having power issues with since recently replacing the UPS units it is connected to.  The enclosure is fully populated with a mix of M610 and M710 blades, and 6 x A2360P-00 power supplies.  The problem is when the UPS unit fails over to battery power, all of the power supplies in my blade lose power for a few seconds.  I have been troubleshooting this for about a week, and I finally tracked it back to an issue with the power supplies in the blade.  After swapping 4 of them out with E2700-P models from a new chassis we just purchased, they stopped dropping during failover.  I think the problem may be related to the UPS voltage going from 200V on wired power to 208V on battery.  The older PSUs seem to have an issue adjusting without temporarily losing power.  Anyone ever heard of this issue before, or have any suggestions?  Maybe the older PSUs just don't handle the voltage fluctuation as well for some reason?

PowerEdge C6220 automatic S5/G2: soft-off for a whole rack of nodes

$

I have a rack of 5 C6220 nodes which for the last couple of weeks have all been turning off for no apparent reason. The BMC logs are not very descriptive as the S5/G2 message is the only message that appears in the logs (see http://imgur.com/Pts25qF

This used to happen once in a while (maybe once every 2-3 weeks) for one machine and for that time being I ignored it. However for the last couple of weeks this happens everyday. The machines don't respond to IMPI commands after dying. I have to manually go in the data center, unplug the two power supplies and plug them back in order to be able to boot the machines.

I found another thread that seems to have the exact same symptoms as me but there is no response (see http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/poweredgec-tools/2014-November/000302.html

1.0.21. I tried to grab the lastest BIOS from Dell (BIOS_YR4WF_LN_2.5.3.BIN) but unfortunately when I run the binary I get the following error:

> BIOS Update failed using Dell RBU method.

However, I am quite skeptical this is BIOS issue as these machines never used to have this problem before. I've been running out of ideas and would appreciate any help I could get.

Memory Upgrade - Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Ent not start

$

Hello!

Server: DELL PowerEdge 2950 (2хCPU, 16Gb (8х2gb) upgraded to 32Gb (8х4Gb).

OS: Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise Edition.

Before upgrade have boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /PAE /3GB /userva=2800

After upgrade memory server starts fine (in BIOS - 32gb RAM), but in Windows available only 15Gb. This right because 3GB option disables memory above 16gb. boot.ini changed to:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /PAE

Servers show POST messages, boot-screen of Windows and halt on start GUI (show blank black screen, no reaction on keyboard/mouse).

Some tries after get stable:
- if remove 4 DIMM (RAM: 4x4Gb) - server and Windows starts fine
- install all 8 DIMM (RAM: 8x4Gb) - server starts fine, but Windows halt on start GUI.

Please help!

PS. Sorry for bad English.

Hi All,

Have  a bunch of PowerEdge 1950's that have the end-of-life DRAC5 card. Is it possible to swap out the DRAC5 card for an iDRAC6 or 7 or 8? (and have everything still work as designed, of course.)

Thanks!
