I have a T620 with one Perc H310 connected to the backplane.

In the iDrac when I go to storage I get the following error:

RAC0501: There are no physical disks to be displayed. 1. Check if the host system is powered off or shutdown. 2. Check if the physical disks are inserted into the enclosure or attached to the backplane. 3. There are no out-of-band capable controllers detected.

Also when I go to Physical Disk, Virtual Disk or Controller I get

RAC0503: There are no out-of-band capable controllers to be displayed. Check if the host system is powered off or shutdown.

I tried resetting the drac using the command and powering down, still get the same.

is this normal

idrac upgrade / fan speed poweredge t620

I recently upgrade my idrac firmware to 2.10.10.10 from 1.46.45. Since then my fan speeds now run at 2000-2100rpm with normal load. Prior to the upgrade they were running at 1200rpm approx.

I've tried all the suggestions in previous post

- set system profile to disable c1e

- set system profile to disable c1e and c

- tried using different thermal setting in drac setup

- read all the pdf on thermal/cooling and optimal power

I have ESXi 5.5 installed and update everything using suu in lm to latest, so bios is 2.5.2.

I use the server in a homeoffice and would like the fans to be as quiet as possible. If I downgrade to firmware 1.46.45 everything is back to normal but that doesn't feel like an acceptable solution.

Any solutions to quiet down these fan?

thanks

PowerEdge T310 memory upgrade problems

Hi

Today I tried to upgrade the RAM of a T310 server (one X3440 processor) using 4x8Gb memory modules

The mainboard has 6 slots in a row. (The 1st and the 4th slot have white clips).

So, I've installed 2 dimms on the 1st and 2nd slot, and the other 2 ones on the 4th and 5th slot (starting from the top)

When i boot up the server, the lcd on the front, shows the following message "Temp: unavailable" (I think there's more on that message but it stucks there), the fan works on 100% and nothing happens. No screen, no "beeps", no leds on keyboard or mouse, nothing.

I've upgrade BIOS to 1.11.0 but the problem stil remains.

Can you please help me?

Thank you in advance

PowerEdge C8220 sled problem

We have a C8000 enclosure populated with eight C8220 sleds, each fitted with dual Intel E5-2680 2.7 GHz CPUs and 128 Gb of installed memory. One of these sleds however has always been slow - it takes hours to install any Linux OS onto it from a USB DVD drive when all the others installed quickly and in operation, it is slow to respond to commands or run compute jobs.

Since the original BIOS 1.1.11 was reporting the CPUs were running at 3500MHz instead of 2700, a BIOS update to the latest 2.3 version was done and has fixed this mis-reporting. The server is still slow and looking in the output from dmesg, I found these entries whch differ from all the other sleds:

Hierarchical RCU implementation.
[ 0.000000] RCU dyntick-idle grace-period acceleration is enabled.
[ 0.000000] RCU restricting CPUs from NR_CPUS=256 to nr_cpu_ids=120.
[ 0.000000] Offload RCU callbacks from all CPUs
[ 0.000000] Offload RCU callbacks from CPUs: 0-119.

and:

[ 0.000000] smpboot: Allowing 120 CPUs, 88 hotplug CPUs
[ 0.000000] nr_irqs_gsi: 88

The corresponding output from the other sleds is shown below:

Hierarchical RCU implementation.
[ 0.000000] RCU dyntick-idle grace-period acceleration is enabled.
[ 0.000000] RCU restricting CPUs from NR_CPUS=256 to nr_cpu_ids=128.
[ 0.000000] Offload RCU callbacks from all CPUs
[ 0.000000] Offload RCU callbacks from CPUs: 0-127.

and:

[ 0.000000] smpboot: Allowing 128 CPUs, 96 hotplug CPUs
[ 0.000000] nr_irqs_gsi: 88

Look to me like some CPU cores may be faulty - do i have a defective CPU?

iDRAC6 Monolithic v1.99 and Lifecycle Controller/Unified Server Configurator 1.7.5

Hi Guys,

I recently upgraded one of my R710s from iDRAC 1.2 to 1.99 and that went smoothly, obviously this took it out of the compatibility matrix here for LC1:

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/4594.lifecycle-controller-1

I then upgraded (Via Dell Repo Manager and the exported Bootable firmware ISO) LC1 to 1.6.5.12, however upon upgrading System Services were no longer usable (hanging on Initialising Unified Server Configuration - hanging on Gathering System Inventory).

Basically telling me that LC1 was hosed, so logged into iDRAC and ran the update option with the LC1 repair package for v1.7.5.4:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverid=80XJ1&osCode=RHEL5&fileId=3467737922&languageCode=en&categoryId=ES

It now shows in iDRAC that the Lifecycle Controller Firmware is at 1.7.5.4 as expected, however the behaviour is exactly the same as with 1.6.5.12.

Before the upgrade LC1 was as v1.2 - it would collect inventories and log into the GUI (however no firmware update option, hence the upgrade in the first place).

Can anyone define the compatibility matrix for iDRAC and LC1/USC for the new v1.99 and 1.7.5.4 of those items respectively.

Also, if it is possible to re-flash iDRAC and LC1 to much earlier firmware revisions?

Another strangeness I have noticed on this iDRAC compared to my others - there is no "Dell" branding ANYWHERE, even with the Dell firmware upgrades installed (did one from TFTP to make sure it was clean).

Any light on the above problems would be great,

Thanks,

Myles

R720 with H710P CacheCade Question

$

Trying to redesign my server to maximize database performance. I've not used cachecade before and thought I'd give it a whirl in my server to see if it helps database performance. It's hard to get a good read on the H710P cachecade information and most information Dell puts out is pretty high level overview. I've read that cachecade 2.0 is not available on the H710P but the Dell posting talking about this was very old -- is this still true and only cachecade 1.1 is supported as a read-only cache?

I had a hard time pinning down up-to-date information on supported SSD drives for use with cachecade. I ended up buying a couple Samsung 850 PRO 128GB drives as I did read a few posts saying these worked well although the information was not directly from Dell. Since this is read-only cachecade I assume these ought to last long enough to make it worth it. Replacing these wouldn't be an issue if they wear. Not sure what kind of life to expect on these but presumably it would be decent enough. SLC would only be a reasonable option if MLC drives fail quickly.

The last unknown is how cachecade is applied to virtual devices. Is a cachecaid array global for the entire pool of virtual disks or do you have to associate it with a virtual disk? I specifically want to utilize this for my database server (Sybase ASE 15.7). Right now my Sybase guest is on an 8 disk 15K SAS 300GB RAID10 array. Performance is okay but I'd like to speed it up as the data is critical for accessibility within a reasonable access time.

The good news is I have a test server that I get to test all of this on but not being familiar with cachecade and the best way to get performance I thought I'd ask.

Currently I have 2 arrays (no cachecade).

RAID5 DATASTORE1 = 8x 300GB 10K SAS drives in RAID5 for ESXi host and vmware guests.

RAID10 DATASTORE2 = 8x 300GB 15K SAS drives in RAID10 for Sybase ASE (RHEL6) guest.

Here is what I'm thinking about doing (any advice is appreciated):

Internal server ports on VRTX

$

I feel like I'm going to get a painfully obvious answer here, but how do I activate more ports for a blade server in a VRTX chassis?

Both my blades have 2 of 4 ports active.  If i go into port config in the I/O module GUI, the other two ports show "down", but there are no options to bring them up.

This makes me think that each blade server would have a setting for how many of the internal NIC ports it uses, but I can't find such a setting anywhere in chassis management GUI.

What am I missing?

Poweredge 1850- bblinking amber light(hardware failure). Any way to find the issue?

A few months ago, I buy a old poweredge 1850 with 1 single core hyperthreaded Xeon's. It worked when it was being shown to us, but it didn't post when we got home. I tried a lot, and I see nothing that could be wrong. I heard once on here that the blinking light is a hardware failure, but is there any way to actually see what the issue is? On the pdf is says view Installation and troubleshooting guide(which I was in :/) And there isn't much more info but that blinking light is a hardware failure. How do I actually find the issue???

T310 automatic "power on" setting?

$

When we are away for extemded periods, we turn our servers off.  Sometimes however we need to start the servers remotely and we don't want to rely on WOL for this.  We've had nothing but trouble with WOL but that is a seperate topic.

We are thinking of purchasing a power switch for our servers which can be controlled remotely.  This is a simple switch which allows you to connect to it over a network and turn individual power outlets on and off.  In order for it to work with a computer however, the computer has to have the ability to automatically boot once it gets power.

Does anyone know if there is a setting in the BIOS of a T310 that will cause the computer to automatically start if it gets power?  Thank you

installing M610 with vmware esxi 6.0

Does anyone have vmware esxi 6.0 running on M610 blades?

The M610 shows up on the vmware compatability list and Dell has a custom .iso for 6, but 6 is not an option under the Life Cycle Controller and it gives a PSOD when just installing from the custom .iso

We have tried this on several blades, all with up to date firmware, life cycle controller, OS deployment drivers etc.

Dell T630 RAID configurations

$

Hi.

I plan to acquire a T630 with 30x 300 GB 15 K SAS drives with Dual PERC H730P

Questions:

1. Can I create the following RAID sets

Logical Drive C = RAID 1 with 2x 300 GB (OS)

Logical Drive D = RAID 10 with 4x 300 GB

Logical Drive E = RAID 10 with 4x 300 GB

Logical Drive F = RAID 10 with 8x 300 GB

Logical Drive G = RAID 10 with 12x 300 GB

2. What is the maximum number of Disks I can have for a RAID 10 config ?

3. Should I get Dual PERC Cards or just a single PERC Card ?

Thanks,

Paul

NIC updates...loooooong time taken

Hi,

When performing a NIC update on an R820 (via DRAC) I noticed that the Task Time Limit is set to 1 hour and 40 mins!! This would cause major disruption if it really extended that far. (Actual only took 10 mins).

Can this Task Time Limit be reviewed to a more reasonable time before timing out and causing a restart?

Thx,

H200 RAID controller card - should it be this complicated?

$

I got a Dell T110-II with the S300 RAID controller and SATA hard drives.  I got Win Server Essentials 2012R2 vial Volume License.  Duh!  The S300 doesn't work with server essentials 2012R2.

So I order an H200 RAID controller from Dell.  I wonder if it will come with the cable(s) I need.

I get the card today. It comes with a cable!!  But then I try to connect the cables to the RAID controller (they connect fine to the SATA hard drives and power connectors in the computer).

What? are these cables (that came in the box with the RAID controller) supposed to go in these connectors on the raid controller?!
