Hi all,

I'm going to run a deep learning project with Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X GPU.

One of my options is utilizing a PowerEdge T630 server.

So, I have two questions:

1- Does T630 support Ubuntu OS?

2- Does T630 support Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X?

T110 Gigabit Ethernet Upgrade Recommendation?

Got a T110 running Win2K3 SP2 Standard x86, but not totally content with the on-board Broadcom gigabit Ethernet adapter.  Tempted to upgrade to something Intel based, found one, but realized there might be some conflict caused by using it.  I originally wanted to get the "INTEL PRO 1000 CT PCIe 1x" from Amazon for like $30 for the price, but found 2 reviews that specifically said that their T110 servers could not take the card because of some motherboard/boot error after installing the card.  I'm guessing this might have something to do with multiple network boot agents on BIOS startup, but I'm not sure. I'm thinking of maybe just getting it, and making it a point to disable the onboard Ethernet before installing the cards to see how it goes.  But there is some hesitation ...

Has anyone here upgraded from their onboard Ethernet to something more robust?  Recommendations? Many Thanks in Advance!

FX2 IOA constantly requesting DHCP, exhausting vlan1 scope with BAD_ADDRESS

I have a Win 2008 R2 (and then upgraded to 2012 R2) DHCP server which was getting loads of BAD_ADDRESS filling up the scope in vlan1.  All other scopes for other vlans were unaffected.  Wireshark indicated a the dell mac address for the management of IOA which the switch showed on our PortChannel3 (two 10gbe fiber optic interfaces).

But in our IOA config we have a static IP set of 10.1.0.103/16. The DHCP server is at 10.1.1.1/16 and also offers ip's in other scopes (vlan2 10.2.1.1/16, vlan3 10.3.1.1/16, vlan4 10.4.1.1/16 and vlan5 10.5.1.1/16).

I had to put the Dell IOA mac address in the DHCP deny filter list and enable it so that it would not respond and plug up our address space full of BAD_ADDRESS.

Any idea why the IOA is doing dhcp requests even though we set it for a static IP?

Dell Poweredge 2600 - Error During Startup

I have a Dell Poweredge 2600 with 2 Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz processors and 3 GB of RAM. During startup it displays the following error message:

Invalid SCSI configuration; SCSI cable detected on connector SCSI B of the primary SCSI backplane, daughtercard not present.

However, there is no connection made on the SCSI B connector of the backplane. The SCSI A connector on the system board is connected to the upper 1x2 backplane. The SCSI B connector of the system board is connected to the SCSI A connector on the lower 1x6 backplane.

I have attempted to flash the BIOS from a floppy without success. The system does not show any boot devices, even with bootable media in the floppy / cd rom drive. Can you please help me determine what troubleshooting steps I should perform to determine the cause of the error? Thank you for your help.

SUU is showing an Upgrade as a Downgrade...

I have some R630s that have the OS Collector v1.0.  The latest repository and the Support website have Version 2.0.  For whatever reason, the SUU program is showing the 2.0 as a Downgrade from 1.0.

I'm not sure if I should check it since it appears it will indeed run the 2.0 version since it seems to be confused.

Any thoughts?

PowerEdge M610 and BCM57111 firmware update troubles

$

Hi,

I am currently doing a maintenance on our m1000e chassis, flashing the firmwares to the latest versions.

Our setup is:

- m1000e chassis
A1 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
A2 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
B1 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
B2 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
C1 - Dell PowerConnect M8024
C2 - Dell PowerConnect M8024

- 16 x PowerEdge M610 blades
Fabric A - Embedded LOM (1 gig)
Fabric B - Broadcom M5709t (1 gig)
Fabric C - Broadcom M57711 (10 gig)

Updating the chassis went well, everything is up to date.

But I'm having a lot of trouble updating the Broadcom M57711 on the blades.

I first tried to update them from OMSA "dsu" utility, without success.
Updating everything else on the blades went well, except the M57711 NIC's.

Then I was told that it should be updated from an updater live cd that I grabbed from:
www.dell.com/.../SLN296511 (update repositories)
Most specifically: dell.app.box.com/.../8303280249

It detected the NIC and started flashing them, but then this happened:

Device: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth4)
Application: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth4)
Update failure. Firmware programming utility returned an error. Original firmware restored

Device: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth5)
Application: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth5)
Update failure. Firmware programming utility returned an error. Original firmware restored

So I rebooted the blades to their OS, and ... Both M57711 interfaces are gone.

When bnx2x driver is loading it's throwing this:
[ 659.758218] bnx2x: QLogic 5771x/578xx 10/20-Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2x 1.713.04 ($DateTime: 2016/01/24 22:14:19 $)
[ 659.758383] bnx2x 0000:05:00.0: msix capability found
[ 659.758394] bnx2x: probe of 0000:05:00.0 failed with error -22
[ 659.758399] bnx2x 0000:05:00.1: msix capability found
[ 659.758403] bnx2x: probe of 0000:05:00.1 failed with error -22

Lspci is seeing the cards:
05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe
05:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe

However, on the iDRAC of the blades they do not show up anymore. Only the other 1gig NICs are seen.

So I tried to reflash the firmware from the CMC update server components page (it's using the lifecycle controller to flash it).
With the latest firmware proposed by Dell for this card (using the blades service tag):
www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails
The blade rebooted, tried to flash and reported a failure.

I tried again with a less recent firmware:
www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails
Same problem.

I'm now stuck with the blades iDRAC and OS not seeing the cards anymore.

Anyone experienced something like this ?
I'm out of ideas what to try next.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I have few Dell servers with  ESXi 6.0 installed using the Dell custom ISO.

Now, I wish to update to the latest build (ESXi 6.0 U2).

Should I use the links from VMware ESXi Patch Tracker  (https://esxi-patches.v-front.de/ESXi-6.0.0.html), need to a specific update from Dell?

CPU Voltage sensor problem

$

I have a Dell PowerEdge T110 server. For the past few days my server started acting weird since I move it into a new spot. Amber light at front started flashing and at first I thought this is indication of not properly closed side lid but it wasn't the case. Server turned off itself. At first I couldn't restart it and I thought this is power supply and I changed it for a new one. Server restart with no problem but after sometime turned off itself back again and the only Amber light at front is pulsing. To restart the server I have tu turn it off the power and after several seconds plug the power cord back again however server after sometime does the same thing turning itself off.

I did run hardware test and it came back with Error Code 2900:0221; Msg: IPMI - Jul 16 08:49:34 2016: processor.: Voltage sensor (MEM PG) state asserted "CPU1".

In this case I did open server and took the CPU out and I cleaned everything from dust and I applied a new thermal paste (the old one was completely dry and gone) and after all restarted server again but still does the same thing.

Next step I did reset simos by taking the battery out but still same problem occurs and this time the server doesn't wanna boot and it says the boot sequence is set to Bios but in Bios there is no option to turn that off. Also when I wanna change AHCI mode to RAID mode on SATA controller I get the warning message saying: Data lose will occur!

Any sugestions?

My Dell M620s have always restarted after an OS "reboot", or an idrac power cycle or warm boot.

Now, they are consistently hanging when I reboot or power them up.

14 out of 16 require reseating of blade to power up.

Any ideas?

Dell C6100 : complete newbie

Hello,

I was planning to setup a renderfarm, using several desktops, when I stumbled across the C6100 XS23-TY3 poweredge.

At first glance, this solution would be much cheaper with faster rendertimes (according to cinebench scores). But I don't know if all the hassle, to make a C6100 up and running, is worth it.

So as I'm a total newbie, when it comes to cloud servers, I have several questions regarding the c6100.

1) When it comes to Windows OS, I suppose I have to use Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 ? What is the best/most reliable option  ?

2) I suppose I have to install Windows on each node ?

3) And does windows suffice to make the C6100 up and running, or do I need other software as well ?

4) As the C6100 has a sata controller, can I use a SSD drive instead of a SAS drive ? And if so, is it also Plug'n Play like in regular desktops or is there more to it ?

5) If I have to install software on each node, can this be done in one go, without accessing each node separately ? I'm aware that there are renderfarms, which consists of 3000 nodes or more. I can't imagine they have to remote desktop each node, in order to install a new plugin.

6) Any known issues with the C6100 ?

Many thanks in advance !

Dell R510 - RAID w / FreeNAS

We are in the process of replacing old hardware, however we want to utilize some of our R510s as storage arrays. We purchased 4TB drives with the hope of using FreeNAS to run the RAID and integrate with our VMWare infrastructure. Shortly after installing the new drives, we realized that we had a SAS 6iR RAID controller, which does not allow for pass-through. What would everyone suggest our next step should be? We were looking into purchasing a PERC H700, but found out that does not have pass-through capability either, unless you RAID0 each drive.

Thoughts?

iDRAC Configuration on PowerEdge R710

$

Hello,

I don't know if I'm configuring iDRAC correctly. I am currently using the shared mode on my server's iDRAC and am using a static IP for obvious reasons. Right now I am using the same IP as the server's operating system, but can't connect. Should I be using the same IP or should it be different? I figure since its sharing the NIC, it should be on the same IP right?

The version of iDRAC I am using is 2.85, A00 (just updated the firmware)

Also, I can't access the driver page for my server as of today? I downloaded a driver from it yesterday but can't access it today. Called support and they had no clue how to help me.

Thanks in advance.

PowerEdge R520 high fan speed with SSDs

$

I've acquired a second hand R520 with a PERC H710 and thought I'd pick up two SSDs to use in it with CacheCade.  These work fine and are usable in CacheCade however, when they're inserted the fan speeds ramp up to 5880 RPM.  The SSDs are a cheap brand (Apacer) and are obviously registering as unsupported by the controller and flashing an amber light on the enclosure but they work fine.  Is it normal for the fans to speed up with SSDs attached or is this a result of the drives being unsupported?  Is there any way to bring the fan speeds back down again?
