T610 w/Dead BMC: Would DRAC6 Express bypass BMC?

$

Hey all, might be a dumb question but the story behind it is that there is a SMB owner that isn't exactly in a spot to drop the $$ for a brand new server (at least yet, I am trying to buy them time) and their T610 has been rebooting randomly and it is exacerbated by the inability to communicate with the BMC which the POST erroneously states that it cannot find the iDRAC and reboots once to search for it again before it even hits the OS so we are looking at 20-30 minutes when the server is offline whenever it decides to reboot.  Windows Updates are set to ask so that the OS doesn't reboot to apply updates and the CPU, RAM, and HDDs show no error yet half the items within OpenManage are missing and "System Services Disabled" at POST does not allow preboot diagnostics and the Windows based diagnostics package complains about the LCL so I cannot find out any more information.  The EV logs just show a general hardware fault which Googlefu fails to turn up anything concrete.  I am pretty sure the motherboard needs replacement but my boss really hates the idea of throwing in a used part so I am trying to gather more clues.

So my question is, if we were to install a DRAC Express module, would it stop complaining about the iDRAC (BMC) and let us use the ESM or is the DRAC dependent on the BMC?  Further, I've only been able to find a video for the DRAC in an R710 and the board naturally has a different layout and I am trying to figure out what the black rectangle does in the following picture:

This looks like the DRAC Express but does not feel removable.  Can the BMC itself be replaced?  Should I just keep pushing for a motherboard?

Thanks for any input!!

Dell VRTX Drive Configuration

I am trying to configure a Dell VRTX with 3 Blades with Windows 2012 R2 Failover

I followed the Dell instructions to create a Quorum Disk (RAID 1) and a cluster shared disk (CSV) - Raid 50.

The issue is, in each Windows Host, Disk Manager sees each virtual disk twice/

What have I missed?

Lifecycle Controller IP. Is it always active?

We currently have the Windows IP and the iDrac IP setup for all our servers.  We then used the lifecycle Controller to do some firmware updates which needed yet another IP address.

I really don't want to have to set aside 3 IP addresses for every server so what are our options?  Does the Lifecycle IP only get used if you actually log into the Lifecycle contoller?  If so, can I just use the same IP on all my servers as long as I'm never trying to use two at once?  Maybe I can just turn the IP off when I'm not using it...

Just looking for options.

Thanks!

PowerEdge C6145 BMC critical condition event in Power On mode S0/S1

I have a PowerEdge C6145 that went off warranttee last Nov. We had a power outage about a week ago and our UPS failed. The PowerEdge C6145 seemed okay when the power cam back, but now it is blinking the power buttons alternating green and amber. I peeked in the manual and Here's what it says:

Power and System Board Indicator Codes
The LEDs on the system front panel and back panel display status codes during system startup.
Ta b l e 1
lists the status associated with the status codes.
. Status Indicator Codes

Green Blinking On S0/S1  BMC critical condition event in Power On

Amber Blinking BMC Critical condition event in Power On
Unfortunately I don't know what that means and it is not mentioned again or explained in the manual. Nothing obviously wrong in the log. Just annoying blinking lights with no explanation.
Can someone give me a clue?
Thanks,
Dave

Dell C6100 Flashing green/amber lights

Hi there,

I do apologize that this is almost certainly in the wrong place. I am very new to this forum and not too sure where I should be posting/looking.

I recently got a second hand C6100 server machine with 4 nodes installed. I just had a chance to turn it for the first time today. All four lights on the front of the Chassis turn green. But then after a minute or two, they start flashing green and amber.

It's a steady off,green,off,amber repeat.

I have been looking everywhere to work out what could be causing this. As far as I can see all four nodes are seemingly functioning. Screen turns on, and it boots.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Much thanks,

Damian

initializing firmware interfaces

hi,

I restarted Dell PowerEdge M620 machine and not it is not coming up. when I saw using iDRAC remote console.

it is showing "initializing firmware interfaces" and it stuck there. I waited for more then 10 hours but it doesn't boot.

I tried to go to F10 life cycle controller to disable inventory check. but this message is coming before it enters to life cycle controller.

even I cannot go to bios also. this message appears first after initial boot messages.

how I can disable inventory check by going to lifecycle controller settings. remember I cannot go Operating system I cannot boot.

is there any option in the iDRAC remote console?

In pdf It is written I can go to USC (unified server configurator) or ws-man to modify it.

what is WS-MAN from where I can download it. can I install in on my laptop (since server is not booting to OS)

and usc requires OS. right?

please suggest

if you can provide link to download ws-man or USC better.

thank you in advance

PE M630 for VRTX and ESXi 6.0

I have a Dell VRTX server with two M630's for VRTX installed.  When they were setup a year ago, I used the Dell customized image available for them to install ESXi originally, then I have used VUM to keep them updated, through Update 2 and the current patch.  Strangely, the image I used, ESXi 6.0 build 2809209, is still listed as the current image available for the M630 for VRTX.  Dell's current build of customized ESXi 6.0 Update 2 build 3620759 does not list the M630 for VRTX as a compatible system.  The M630 is listed, as is several other systems for the VRTX such as the M620 for VRTX.

Is there something holding these systems back from being listed as compatible with this image?  As I said, I currently have ESXi fully updated, so it isn't a huge issue.  However, I would really like to get an updated version of all the custom VIB's installed without having to individually install them.

This is the file listed as compatible with the M630 for VRTX:

hxxp://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=KDCJN

And this is the current update, listed as compatible with pretty much everything BUT the M630 for VRTX:

hxxp://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=HPK76

Thanks.

RAID setups on new T620

We will be purchasing a new T620 with a PERC h710p card to setup a RAID1 and RAID10 scenario.  We would like to have the C:\ as RAID 1 and D:\ as RAID 10 with one more HDD as a global hot spare.  The OS will be on C:\ and SQL on D:\.  All HDD's with be 300gb 15k.  I have setup up RAID 5's before with a hot spare, but this will be new to me.  What should I be aware of going into this?  Also, any documentation I should review?

Thank you

Dell T20 and SR-IOV

Hi,

I have a Dell T20 with the Xeon processor; I'm generally very happy with it but I'm struggling to get SR-IOV working with my Intel 82576 Network cards. As far as I can tell, my system meets the requirements (IOMMU, VT-D, etc.) but on ESXi 6.0U2 I cannot get it to function. The only thing that seems to be "missing" is the global option to enable "SR-IOV" in the BIOS, which seems to be present in the higher-end Poweredge servers.

However, I've found a few references on the internet of customers using SR-IOV on Dell T20 with various flavours of Linux, so I don't think this a problem.

I have tried the Dell ESXi Image and the generic build, but continue to get "unavailable".  I am running latest BIOS, Firmware for my NICs (two variants) and have patched ESXi.

I realise what I'm asking is largely unsupported, but wanted to check that there was nothing fundamentally impossible in what I'm attempting.

Thanks in advance!

iDrac Express - R720 ?

I am trying to setup iDrac on a Dell R720.  I have setup iDrac at system boot menu and I have "EXPRESS" license. I cannot figure out what physical port on the Dell do I connect to use this license.

It looks like for the 'iDrac Port" I need Enterprise License.

What can be done with the "Express License" and what port to connect to us iDrac ?

Thanks in advance

R815 : Non optimal memory configuration after upgrading from 2 CPUs to 4

$

Hi folks,

I have a few R815 servers that I've upgraded from 2 CPUs each to 4 CPUs each.   The servers have 256GB of RAM in the form of 16x16GB PC3L 12800R sticks.

After first seeing that message, I concluded that it was likely because I left the 16 sticks in slots A1-A8 and B1-B8, despite now having 4 CPUs.   However, after rearranging the sticks to be in A1-A4, B1-B4, C1-C4, and D1-D4, I still get the error on boot.

As a workaround for now, I've disabled the keyboard prompt on the error.  But I still assume that something isn't right.  The manual that I saw does indicate that A1-A4, B1-B4, C1-C4, and D1-D4 is the proper layout for a 4-CPU system, though the capacities seem dated.  (It only lists capacities of up to 8GB per stick)

Is it possible that my sticks need to be configured at 8 sticks per CPU?

Thanks!

Reported fault on every SATA drive when connected to a Perc 6/i raid controller

I recently purchased a Dell R710 (service tag <removed>) that came with a Perc 6i integrated raid controller.

I also purchased 6 (Dell Certified 1TB Enterprise SATA 3.5") hard drives, (WD1003FBYX-18Y7B0) that came with a SATA HDD Tray cady. http://goo.gl/jwalpE

Some time after booting, every drive caddy starts flashing and I get the error message "Fault detected on drive" for each drive. After rebooting and pressing ctrl+r when prompted, then pressing ctrl+n to view physical drives, it says that there are none.  I have tried  reseating everything: the drives, cables, back pane, raid controller, and riser cards with no luck.

If it helps any, the raid controller firmware version number is 6.3.3.0002
and I am waiting for a new battery for the raid card.

Is this a problem stemming from a malfunctioning raid battery, or is there a way to test if the problem is a bad raid controller, back plane, or cables.  It doesn't seem likely that both cables would go bad so maybe its not the cables.

Ear all,

I have blade M1000e, servers are PowerEdge M610. BIOS version is is 6.4.0., its CMC (M1000e) Firmware version is 5.12, and iDRAC6 Firmware version is 3.80 (Build 3).
While resetting controller iDRAC6 - CMC sends an e-mail message "CMC is unable to obtain the CPU information from the server specified in the message. This occurs if there is no communication between CMC and iDRAC."

Where is the issue?

I have 2 Dell R710's that only display 640x480 out of both the VGA ports. There is no indication of a video driver issue, and these devices are on 24/7 so it's not like it happened during a reboot. Any idea's?

poweredge 2900 PERC 5

hello all, i wonder if there is anyone here who can help me, i know very little about servers and i suspect i have done something stupid, and im hoping its reversable.

i have a poweredge 2900, all was fine, but it started to get slow, so i have bought a new newer version with a lot more ram, twin cpus etc.

both systems have the PERC5

bays 0 and 1 are a mirrored pair with OS and data on them

bays 2,3 and 4 are a raid 5 containing my media files

bays 5,6 and 7 are just single drives.

i backed up my data from the OS drive, just my person stuff as i was expecting to need to do a reinstall.

then i took bays 1 and 2 from the old server to the new, imported foreign config and the machine booted, did a few updates etc and all was fine.

this is where i started to mess up...

as the first pair worked, i assumed the rest would, and put the rest of the drives in (all drive in the same order, in the same bays). believing it would work due to the first two working, i didnt back up the raid 5 drives. and yes i know it was stupid

the new server wont see the drives, so now i took all the drives out and put them back into the old server. in the old server it has the option to import the foriegn cofig from the first two drives, and all the rest have rebuild next to them.

i am now scared to be honest to do anything else for fear of losing all my media etc, is there anyone that can talk me through this in baby steps please?

thanks

Hi all,

I'm going to run a deep learning project with Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X GPU.

One of my options is utilizing a PowerEdge T630 server.

So, I have two questions:

1- Does T630 support Ubuntu OS?

2- Does T630 support Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X?
