Good Day and HNY to all
I  am running  a ms 2008 64 bit  on a PowerEdge R710 Dell Server
After an electricity shut down , during the boot i get this message
IDRAC6 not responding. Power required may exceed PSU wattage
Press F1 key to continue, f2 to run system setup program
There is a "How to resolve note " , but i cannot boot to iDRAC BIOS because , no message Ctrl+E is displayed . So, i try to press many times during the boot Ctrl+E and the system is not responding at  to the command . Moreover the funs are running on high mode, which is not odd according to this issue . The ex system adminitrator did not provide me any setting of IDRAC, including ip, webport, username or password and i am unable to access it via web
Any help will be appreciate. I am really stuck there

PowerEdge M610 and BCM57111 firmware update troubles

$

Hi,

I am currently doing a maintenance on our m1000e chassis, flashing the firmwares to the latest versions.

Our setup is:

- m1000e chassis
A1 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
A2 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
B1 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
B2 - Dell PowerConnect M6220
C1 - Dell PowerConnect M8024
C2 - Dell PowerConnect M8024

- 16 x PowerEdge M610 blades
Fabric A - Embedded LOM (1 gig)
Fabric B - Broadcom M5709t (1 gig)
Fabric C - Broadcom M57711 (10 gig)

Updating the chassis went well, everything is up to date.

But I'm having a lot of trouble updating the Broadcom M57711 on the blades.

I first tried to update them from OMSA "dsu" utility, without success.
Updating everything else on the blades went well, except the M57711 NIC's.

Then I was told that it should be updated from an updater live cd that I grabbed from:
www.dell.com/.../SLN296511 (update repositories)
Most specifically: dell.app.box.com/.../8303280249

It detected the NIC and started flashing them, but then this happened:

Device: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth4)
Application: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth4)
Update failure. Firmware programming utility returned an error. Original firmware restored

Device: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth5)
Application: BCM57711 10Gigabit PCIe (eth5)
Update failure. Firmware programming utility returned an error. Original firmware restored

So I rebooted the blades to their OS, and ... Both M57711 interfaces are gone.

When bnx2x driver is loading it's throwing this:
[ 659.758218] bnx2x: QLogic 5771x/578xx 10/20-Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2x 1.713.04 ($DateTime: 2016/01/24 22:14:19 $)
[ 659.758383] bnx2x 0000:05:00.0: msix capability found
[ 659.758394] bnx2x: probe of 0000:05:00.0 failed with error -22
[ 659.758399] bnx2x 0000:05:00.1: msix capability found
[ 659.758403] bnx2x: probe of 0000:05:00.1 failed with error -22

Lspci is seeing the cards:
05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe
05:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57711 10-Gigabit PCIe

However, on the iDRAC of the blades they do not show up anymore. Only the other 1gig NICs are seen.

So I tried to reflash the firmware from the CMC update server components page (it's using the lifecycle controller to flash it).
With the latest firmware proposed by Dell for this card (using the blades service tag):
www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails
The blade rebooted, tried to flash and reported a failure.

I tried again with a less recent firmware:
www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails
Same problem.

I'm now stuck with the blades iDRAC and OS not seeing the cards anymore.

Anyone experienced something like this ?
I'm out of ideas what to try next.

Thanks for your help!

Poweredge 2900 Flex Bay error (with no Flex Bay installed or intended to be installed)

Real stumper here. We have a Poweredge 2900 and are using a PERC 5/i RAID controller. BIOS, backplane, baseboard controller and RAID controller are all on current firmware now.

On boot, the machine declares that the Flex Bay power cable is missing or improperly configured.

Main problem with that is we don't have a Flex Bay. The SAS cables are going straight from the controller to the backplane, and we have no intention of adding a Flex Bay to this machine.

The 8 bay hotswap cage is working fine, the drives in it are doing great on the RAID we set up, and the machine is otherwise 100% functional. Additionally, we've set up another 2900 side by side with this one with identical physical configuration, and it does not experience the same issue. We've verified the SAS cables against known-good ones, and the issue comes up on boot regardless.

This wouldn't be all that big a deal other than the fact that if we ever would need to reboot the 2900 remotely, someone would need to be physically on-hand to get it past the error and back into the OS. Not really ideal for a machine we want to sit in our NOC without much physical intervention.

We've been looking everywhere, but can't really find a way to disable the Flex Bay in the BIOS or the RAID controller.

Anyone have insight they could offer on this issue?

Need help identifying problem with POST error message on PE2900-III please...

Last night our PE2900-III server had some strange I/O errors - was unable to unmount an external USB drive, etc. This system runs CentOS 7 with KVM and was host to several VMs.

I decided to investigate this morning, was able to successfully shutdown all the VMs. Shutdown services, and was going to reboot the server but it got stuck during the shutdown unmounting some of the file systems. Using the remote DRAC console, I reset power on it and it started POSTing, but then halted with the following error:

degraded link width error: embedded i/o bridge device 1

expected link width is x4

actual link width is x1

At first, I thought it might be the USB 3.0 PCIe card that was connected to the external USB drive - since that seemed to relate to the 1st event noticed last night. So, I removed that card entirely, but still got the same error. That USB3.0 card was in slot 5, (PCIE_X4_5 according to Dell PE2900 manual). There's another card in slot 6 PCIE_X4_6 that is a SATA controller connected to the boot drive SSDs (mirrored pair). I tried re-seating that card, but same error.

Honestly, I'm not sure which device is "embedded I/O bridge device 1",... I read somewhere that misbehaving PS2/USB adapters can cause similar issues and have unplugged all USB devices; still same error.

My main request here is for help identifying what "embedded I/O bridge device 1" is... can't seem to locate it in the Dell PE2900 manual. If it's some embedded part of the motherboard, at least I can identify what might need replacing here. Or, is it really the SATA controller or the integrated RAID card slot? In my search, the integrated RAID card slot seems to identify itself as such, not as "embedded i/o bridge device"...  so I didn't think that would be it.

Would appreciate it if anyone could help me identify the issue.

Unable to enable VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT)

Hello,

I have a Dell PE R610 with Bios version 6.4.0 and Dual Processor X5650's, running server 2016 with Hyper-V.

The X5650 processor says it supports Intel® VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT). I have enabled Virtualization technology in the Bios but there no place to enable VT-x.
My question is if my processor supports EPT why am i unable to enable it? Coreinfo says it doesn't support EPT.

Coreinfo

HYPERVISOR * Hypervisor is present
VMX - Supports Intel hardware-assisted virtualization
EPT - Supports Intel extended page tables (SLAT)

Newbie: Missing disks on M610

Hi,

I just bought a M1000e with M610 blades for training purposes. I popped in two Dell branded SAS drives but nothing is presented to Linux (run on SD card) and nothing is found during the BIOS POST. What am I doing wrong? These blades have no RAID controller modules so I'm not expecting RAID, but I was under the assumption that these would initialize as simple drives. Do I have to have a HBA module in every blade just to utilize them as simple drives?

Additionally, does anyone know if the SD card slot supports high capacity SDXC cards? Also does anyone have benchmark numbers for the throughput of the SD card interface? Is it faster than the internal USB port?

Windows Server 2016 / Lifecycle Controller

New Lifecycle Controller 2.40.40.40 was released Oct 12, the same day as Windows Server 2016 general availability, but it doesn't appear to support Server 2016. (I expected to see Windows Server 2016 included in the options for OS deployment, but it's not there.)

Is an update coming soon? Thanks!

Server will not boot into windows - I believe due to no system drive space?

I noticed that the system drive was completely out of space - so I rebooted the server thinking that during a reboot it might free up some space... but it would not boot into windows - it will go to recovery options - This is a 2008 R2 server - Poweredge R510 - Raid 5 - I was wondering if there was a way to possibly either clear space on the system drive pre-boot? or make the partition larger preboot? (without comprising any data) .. or any other options recommended to resolve this so that I can get back into windows to manage our system drive and free up space. Thanks

poweredge T410 only boots to recovery mode

One of my clients servers appears to have been hacked and now it only boots to recovery mode. Upon first attempt to get in to the recovery mode the server said the login information was incorrect. I then used my passcape disk to try and change the admin password and it told me that the SAM file was found and the password it gave was not my password.

I am now able to login to the recovery mode using the changed password, but when I attempt recovery there are no recovery images found and there are no visible drives to search. When I boot up the raid configuration says that there are 2 VD and both are optimal managed by bios. But the recovery mode does not see them. I looked for drivers for the perc 6i but have not been able to find them.

the server is running SBS 2011 and Microsoft tells me that it has reach end of support. I am able to browse the drives and all of the data appears to be there but how can I get this server back up and running without data loss and having to do a reinstall?

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help

PE R720 PSU mismatch issue

$

Hi-

We had a PSU go bad in one of our R720s.  The server was reporting a mismatch with the good PS flashing green, and the bad PS flashing amber.  Server administrator reported PS1 in a good state, and PS2 critical with the status "Presence Detected, Configuration Error".

We replaced PS2 (PN: 05NF18) with an new unit (PN: 09PXCV).  Both part numbers are supposed to be the same manufacturer (Delta) and use the same firmware.  After hot swapping the PSUs, we still get a PSU mismatch.  However, this time both PSU modules are flashing green lights.  PS2 is still reporting as critical with the status "Presence Detected, Configuration Error".  The only difference I can tell between the 2 units, is that the firmware on the 2 units is different.  PS1 is at 07.2B.7D while PS2 is using 09.2B.80; but Dell documentations claims that a differing firmwares will not cause a mismatch scenario.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

Update: Came across a thread that states a firmware difference will cause a PSU mismatch.  This contradicts Dell documentation, but I'm going to believe it because the thread describes a situation very similar to ours.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19630123

My new question is can I hot swap PS1 with the other new PSU we bought or will I need to schedule a maintenance windows to bring the server down?

Thanks again!

SED drive shows blocked

R720XD with H710p controller. Drive is a Dell 600B SED drive P/N: YJTKX , Drive is used if that makes a difference. Upgraded firmware on controller to 21.3.4-0001. Drive shows blocked. Only option available in controller screen is under security I am able to create and delete security keys so don't think that is the issue. On the drive itself only option available is to blick the led. Tried resetting controller to factory default. This is just a test server so this is the only drive I have in it at the moment.

Any Ideas?

I have a RAID 1 setup with 2 disks making up the RAID and 1 hot spare (total of 3 disks).  My primary disk is blinking amber/green (showing smart errors).  Knowing that the disk will probably fail in the near future I want to swap out the bad disk.  Can I transfer the primary disks contents to the hot spare so I can removed/replace the failing disk?

Dell Poweredge R720 (No drives detected)

I haven't really used any Dell servers before so sorry in advance if this is a dumb question.

Back story - I recently inherited a recycled R720 server which used only SAN storage and no physical drives.  I purchased 8 x 1TB SATA 7K drives which are Dell certified enterprise class drives.  This system has a S110 software raid available but nothing else.  When I power it up I get 1 green blip on the drives and nothing else.  The drives are not detected in BIOS nor in the S110.

After looking through manual I noticed an 'integrated storage controller card' shown in the diagram for the 8x 3.4" back-pane setup.

Question:

Do I need this integrated storage card?  I was looking at purchasing a PERC H710

PowerEdge R815 multiple drive failed and missing drive. OS is not loding up.

Hi all,

I have few issue and not sure where to start.

I have  PowerEdge R815, Windows 2012R2 with Raid 5 config. with 6 drive.  And Perch H700 controller.

The issues are first, multiple drives has failed and one shows as missing drive.  Also virtual disk shows up as offline.

01:00:03                             Failed

01:00:04                             online

01:00:05                             online

The issue began after a power outage in our building.  As we turned on the server after power came back on the server showed drive 00 failed and 01 missing.  I am new to the company and the senior system engineer has left the company.  But when we contacted him with the issue he suggested that we force online drive 00.  So we did and the server came back online.  We ordered 3 drive to replace the one that missing and have some as spare.  But over the weekend the drive failed again.  So I tried to force online the drive but it would not come back online.  It goes through the process of booting but get to the page where I have the option to ‘exit and continue to windows server 2012 R2’, ‘reset from previous version’ or ‘turn off pc’.  I tried all three option and it keeps coming back to the same place.

My question is where do I start from.  Do I first:

  1.  bring the ‘Ready’ state drive online by choosing ‘make global HS’ option.  This should rebuild the drive.  Correct?
  2. Then bring the failed drive online by ‘force online’
  3. Then reboot.

Also can I reboot the server from one of the drive that is still online by going into BIOS and redirecting to the driver that are still online.

Please help me!! What would be the best way to get the server back online.  I am aware that I might not recover lot of the data which is ok.

Thank you

Dell 1081AD KVM Remote Java Session only works after full reset

$

Hi all,

I've got a strange error on our 1081AD KVM, I can only launch a KVM session after a full reset, and during a few hours timeframe ( could not pinpoint exactly yet) , after that, I cannot launch it anymore.

Being more specific, I do a full factory reset, change passwords, change IP settings. In the next few hours, I can access the KVM, launch console sessions, no issue.

After a few hours time, when I try to launch a Java Session, it gives the error "Could not connect to Server". The error itself is pretty generic, and it is know from issues with Java, mainly due to security settings, like insecure/disabled ciphers , but his is not the case, Java Security settings are correct, the KVM is whitelisted, there are no proxies in between, no changes made on the client machine.

KVM has the latest firmware, version  01.20.00 from dellkvm.com , we also  know from experience that if we re-flash the firmware, it also works during a few hours, the flashing process does some kind of reset...

Steps already done/tried,  without success :

a) Older Java Releases (it needs 1.7+ to work)

b) Older Browsers (IE9, FF 45)

c) Other OS (Windows XP,  CentOS)

d) KVM standard reboot

We are running out of ideias here, does anybody have a clue ? We haven't done a firmware downgrade yet, but that does not seem a future-proof solution...

The relevant part of the Java Console is the following:

SSL session using protocol TLSv1.2, cipher suite TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA
