Discovery of newly added node through iDRAC

We wanted to understand if iDRAC could trigger an event when a new node is plugged in and powered on, so that we can execute our business flow when that event is triggered.

If at all events are not triggered, then can you please let us know any other mechanism by which we can identify that a new node has been added and get the information about that node through iDRAC?

R720 - mixed memory configuration

Hi,

I've R720 fully populated with 24x16 GB dual-rank RDIMMs = they have 384 GB total.

I'd like to upgrade them to 512 GB, but apparently if quad-rank DIMM is installed, the last bank in channel has to remain empty.

Is that correct?

If yes, is it possible to have one channel per CPU populated with 2x32 GB DIMMs and all remaining channels populated with 16 GB ones?

Or all 4 channel need to have exactly the same DIMM layout?

PowerEdge 1800 memory upgrade

Hello,

I'm in the process of getting new sticks of memory for my Server PowerEdge 1800, I asked a friend of mine and he said that according to the manual you can only get a 2GB modules and the maximum capacity for the server is 12GB total.

My question is, can I get a stick of 4GB instead of 2*2GB?

Can I get this part number X1564 (Dell 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM  400 MHz (PC2-3200))?

Do MPUIQ-VMCHS SIP Modules work on Dell 2161ds or 4161ds KVM?

Hello,

We have some 2 upgraded SIP cables, MPUIQ-VMCHS Modules, which we would like to use for remote media installation purposes. We plan on using them on a Dell 2161DS KVM switch and a Dell 4161DS switch but we are running into problems getting it to respond on the KVM.

We performed the latest firmware upgrades on the 2161DS (latest firmware is 2011) and 4161DS (latest firmware is 2013) but both KVMs do not recognize the upgraded SIP cable. It recognizes it as a "Suspect" but we cannot manage it. There was a forum that mentioned the solution was to upgrade the firmware but that did not work ( http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19591247).

Additionally the light of the SIP module displays a "power" led light but never changes to "active" light

It would be great if we could get a confirmation and response on how to allow these SIP cables to work on the 2161DS and the 4161DS Dell KVMs and if they are even compatible with the latest firmware applied to them.

Dell PowerEdge R620 won't boot with E5-2687W v2 CPU's. CPU voltage error

I've tried 2 different sets of CPU's and gotten the same error. I returned the first set, but when the second set gave the exact same errors, I thought there might be an issue with the server, not the CPU's.

These are the errors it gives, in this order. Pull from idrac log.

CPU 1 VCORE PG voltage is outside of range.

CPU 2 VCORE PG voltage is outside of range.

CPU 2 VCORE PG voltage is outside of range. (occurs a few seconds after the first 2 errors)

CPU 2 VCORE PG voltage is outside of range.

and finally:

The system board fail-safe voltage is outside of range.

Nothing ever shows on the screen, all firmware is up to date, including the bios (2.5.4).

This server works perfect fine with my current dual E5-2660 v1 cpu's. Dell's documentation says these v2 cpu's are supported, so what gives? Bad motherboard? i'm running the largest dual 1100W power supplies, so it shouldn't be an issue of not enough power. I'm out of warranty, otherwise I'd have dell diagnose. I can buy a new Motherboard for $130, but wanted to try and see if anyone knew with confidence why this doesn't work.

Thanks in advance.

R510 Will Not Boot

I just installed Debian 9 on an SSD and tried to boot the system. In BIOS there are no available boot devices shown and in the UEFI boot device options it says " *Unavailable: debian" (highlighted in blue). I am using a PERC H200 flashed to IT mode. I've tried the installation multiple times with no luck and can't seem to find any documentation on this issue. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I've performed hardware diagnostics and received the following errors:

EDIT2: Cleared the system logs and re-ran diagnostics. Only the CMOS battery error persisted.

- Error Code 2900:0221 Msg: IPMI - <System Boot>: disk drive bay: cable interconnect sensor [Cable SAS A] Configuration Error "Storage"

- Error Code 2900:0221 Msg: IPMI - <System Boot>: disk drive bay: cable interconnect sensor [Cable SAS B] Configuration Error "Storage"

- Error Code 2900:0221  Msg: IPMI - <System Boot>: system board: Battery sensor [CMOS Battery] Battery failed "System Board" (for this one I literally just changed the battery earlier today)

- Error Code 2900:0325 Msg: IPMI - System Board CMOS Battery Battery Failed (again, just changed the battery today)

Can't update iDRAC Firmware

Hi

I have two Dell Poweredge R420 with ESX installed which both fails during boot in the process Initializing idrac...

I have made several ISO images of different iDRAC versions via Dell repository management. But nothing works.

Right now the installed version is 1.65.65 i have tried updating to 1.66.65 and also later versions such as 2.15 but nothing works as mentioned.

I manged to update BIOS because i could update using a .EFI file. But i cant update using a bootable image.

I downloaded iDRAC v2.15 as a .BIN file and made a ISO file which i put on a USB that i made bootable using RUFUS.

After that i press F11 to boot on the USB using BIOS.

First it failes then i press "Alt" + "F2" to get into the command line interface.

From there i type "mount /dev/sda1 /opt/dell/toolkit/systems/"  then i type "/opt/dell/toolkit/systems/drm_files/apply_bundeles.sh" then it starts executing but then it starts Collecting inventory but then it fails and give me theese to lines back

"grep: /proc/ipmi/0/si_stats: No such file or directory"
"...sh: ./disneyinstall.sh: No such file or directory"

Then it says "This update package is not compatible with your system configuration"

What can i do about this?

Hi

We have a Dell R720 , Tag: <removed>

We've removed the 16 Bay SAS BP and installed an 8 Bay SAS and 4 Bay PCIe BP (22FYP)

We've installed a PCIe Extender card in Slot4 (Dell YPNRC 4-Port SAS Expander Card)

We've installed 2 x 350GB SSD (DELL 350GB PCI-E GEN2 2.5" SAS SSD HARD DRIVE - D7D0V)

The Drives come up with green lights, the Extender card and BP seemingly appear in iDRAC but do not show in the BIOS.

No Drives appear in either, or Raid H710P 1Gb Config screen

Any ideas?

OMSA - Current probes not found

Few days ago received power supply 1 failed message.  Green light on PS was on, removed it, swapped out and error did not go away.  OMSA had red X on Main System Chassis, and red X next to PS1.

Manually stopped and restarted DSM services, now OMSA showed green check next to Main System Chassis, and when clicking Power Management group showed the error "Current probes not found".

Then rebooted server, no change.

Was on OMSA 6.3, so did several updates to OMSA 8.4 - no change.  Windows server 2008.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

MD3000i Controller Issues - Non Optimal Array

$

Recently my duel controller MD3000i become non-optional, what seems to be to a battery issue in the controller in Slot 1.  I took the controller offline, pulled the controller and replaced the battery.  The battery fault light disappeared and I could bring the controller online (and those Virtual disks assigned to Controller 1 seem to fall back to their owner), however the MD3000i is still not optimal (battery still logging an issue).

I have tried another battery and another controller, but cannot get the MD3000i back to an optimal state.  Further more, if I leave Controller 1 online I have noticed the MD3000i periodically turn up the cooling fans very high, for a short time and then resume normal operation (I do not ever hear this activity, unless initially starting the device).  Also, if I leave controller 1 online, it seems within a relatively short time I am running into issues with my Host Server that is connected via iSCSI to the MD3000i (this also happened after I moved all disk ownership to controller 0).  I am currently running with Controller 1 offline and, although I have no-redundancy, I am operational.

However, I am not too sure what to do next to resolve this issue.  It seems like a hardware issue but I doubt both the controller and my "spare" controller are both defective, so could it be the chassis?  I have not yet tried stopping all I/O and powering off the MD3000i, nor have I tried swap the controller in Slot 0 with the one in Slot 1 to see if the problems moves.

Any help guidance would be appreciated!  I do have a support bundle I could share...

Thanks!

Dell T20 PowerEdge will only go to Intel Boot Agent and then hangs.

Hi,

I have a PowerEdge T20. It was working fine with a SSD disk for windows 10 and another 1TB WD disk for data. I added another disk on which I wanted to install Linux which initially went OK.

However now I can't see any disks. What ever I do it always goes to the Intel Boot Agent screen and hangs.

At the moment I have just the 1 hard disk in that should be a UEFI Linux Ubuntu boot. (although I get the same results with a SSD with Windows 10).

On power on I get the DELL logo then the Intel Boot Agent screen,

Pressing F2 at boot I get "F12 Boot options" then "preparing to Enter Setup" then it jumps to the Intel Boot Agent Screen.

Pressing F12 it says preparing one time boot and you've guessed it, it jumps to  the Intel Boot Agent Screen.

Nothing seems to stop it jumping to the Boot Agent Screen and then hanging.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Dell UPS 500W find model number

I have a Dell UPS 500W that I need to replace the batteries.  The online store has batteries for 3 different models but I can't find the model on the UPS any where.  How do I find which batteries to order? The have model options for CH38X, H900N and J715N.

I can't find a serial # or model # on this thing.  Where are these located?

Is there a UPS support forum, couldn't find that either so hopefully this is the best place for this question.

PowerEdge M630 (VRTX) with PERC H730 Mini: Virtual drive not detected during installation of ESXi 6.5

Hi Everyone,

We have Dell PowerEdge M630 on VRTX Chassis with Integrated H730 Mini PERC Controller on the M630. Below are the steps I did to setup it but i got an issue at the end:

  1. We have tryed to create RAID 1 with both local disk of the M630 from iDRAC or Integrated H730 Mini PERC Controller UI (using Ctrl+R) or in the Lifecycle Controller: any way the virtual disk is created. The Virtual Drive seems to be created without any alarm on the iDRAC UI
  2. After reboot, we have the following info:
    1. 1 Virtual Drive(s) found on the host adapter
    2. 0 Virtual Drive(s) handled by BIOS
  3. We try to install ESXi 6.5 using the latest Customized ESXi 6.5 ISO: VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0.update01-6765664.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A05

  4. During the installation of the ESXi6.5: The virtual drive is not detected. I can't continue the installation.

Please anyone can help?

Thank You!

Nvidia tesla m40 insufficiently powered in poweredge r730

$

Hello, I got new Dell PowerEdge r730 server with factory installed Nvidia Tesla m40 in it. I installed ESXi hypervisor and Debian 9 GNU/Linux OS on top of it. I also installed proprietary drivers from the non-free package. After that I noticed the nvidia-smi (the tool for monitoring nvidia cards) error message:

“Unable to determine the device handle for GPU 0000:13:00.0: Unable to communicate with GPU because it is insufficiently powered. This may be because not all required external power cables are attached, or the attached cables are not seated properly.

Therefore, graphic card is not working properly. The graphic card has just one 8 pin power connector, which is connected to the power supply. ESXi and Debian see the graphic card as an installed device. I tried multiple versions of Nvidia drivers, however, it did not help to get rid of the error message.

Could somebody suggest solution for dealing with power supply error from nvidia-smi?

R620 Fans Running at Full Speed - No errors or reason why in OpenManage

$

I purchased five R620 servers from dellrefurbished.com. Two of them are working perfectly and three of them are booting up and running all of the fans at full speed (~16000 RPM).  It is very strange to me that three out of five servers are doing the identical thing and none of them show an error in OpenManage.

I have done a fair amount of troubleshooting on this issue.

  • I used the bootable ISO from the Dell support site for R620s to update ALL firmware in this server after I manually updated the Lifecycle controller first.
  • I reset the BIOS to factory defaults.
  • I tried a variety of System Profile settings including disabling C1.
  • I drained the flea power on the servers with the power cords disconnected.
  • I left one server unplugged for 24 hours.
  • I installed OpenManage to see if it thought the chassis was open but that doesn't seem to be the case either. I see entries in the Hardware Log when I open and close the chassis so it seems to be sensing that properly. There is nothing else that I see in OpenManage to indicate why this is happening.  Screenshots attached.
  • I removed some RAM from one of the servers to force it to re-profile the memory and system performance

Nothing has produced a positive result. EVERY time I boot these servers immediately following the memory test at POST the fans spin up to full speed and nothing I do gets them to stop.

These servers are just out of their initial 3 year warranty so I can't contact Dell support.  The dellrefurbished.com website says that they offer a 100 day warranty on their site and refer to it as the "Legendary Dell 100 day limited warranty".  When I called them for support they suggested that I return the servers for credit or post on this forum after asking some routine support questions.  I'm not sure I would agree that this is "Legendary" support.

I have already committed to delivering these servers to clients and I would really like to get them working without returning them to dellrefurbished.com for credit.  Is my only option to pay Dell to reinstate the warranty?  Has anyone else encountered this same issue and know why it is happening?

I saw a couple of other forum posts after doing a search on google and it looks like they all ended up getting the motherboard replaced.

The site that I purchased these servers from says that the Dell computers are "Refurbished to Dell Specifications".  Either they didn't actually test them or something weird is going on here.  Otherwise three recently refurbished servers wouldn't all be doing EXACTLY the same thing.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
